After an urgent care visit, the doctor highly suggested I quickly visit the ER. There were over 15 people ahead of me. I spent 4 hours in the waiting room. A women came around midnight stating there was no definite time, but there were 7 people in rooms that needed to be admitted. At last. I was given a room. However, no one checked in on me or stopped by to ask if I needed anything for over an hour. The nurse came in and stated I was unassigned, she did not take an vitals nor ask me about my pain, she left saying they were short staffed. She did not seem at all concerned with me, rather the rush of the night. After 2:30 hours in my room with no update, I walked to the desk to see if I was able to go home. There were about 5 nurses looking at computers. Still over 3 hours later no update. I was given instructions almost 7 hours prior not to drink water and to wait to talk to the doctor. There was one doctor on staff. Finally, I thought a doctor was coming to see me, turns out she was coming to materials from my room. I believe I am a patient person, but I feel I have lost my patience after 7 hours with no update if I can have fluids or little understanding or concern about why I am here. I will not being coming back for any future medical concerns. You lost my trust in saving anyone from any future emergncy. May all be safe.

This (the original Alta Bates on Ashby in Berkeley) once was a great hospital. Im assuming that that is why the greedheads at Shutter are using it as the brand for many of (all?) their facilities in the east bay. My 86 year old mother went to the ER recently; the doctor called and said words to the effect that she should be admitted but she didnt test positive for anything that allowed him to admit her. She went back the next day, was admitted (a more reasonable doctor saying roughly, Ill just test her until I can get it past the apparatchiks). Urinary tract infection. In 6 days, despite repeated promises, I never saw or spoke to an MD (I cant get there at 8:00 am for rounds). Her records were bungled. Most of the staff didnt know she had Alzheimers--important because she cant follow directions and because medication sensitivities and recovery times are affected. An MD friend told me that of all the Bay Area medical facilities, Shutter is the worst for lucre-driven, Kafkaesque nightmares. They booted her out with no notice on Christmas day. She had three new prescriptions and their pharmacy was closed--nearest open one we found was in Concord). The doctor had ordered a hospital bed--try getting one delivered on Christmas day. A horror show.

Praetorian Centurion

The nurses were not only helpful and nice but are genuinely looking after the comfort of their patients and family. We stayed there two nights and the experience helped alleviate the pain of surgery. Even the parking attendant helped in lowering our fee by suggesting to get the weekly rate. It was our first time but I sure will go there as my primary hospital of choice.

Poor medical care, did not address problem. Dealing with billing department is a nightmare -- disorganized, cant get receipt for payment, double billing. This experience will stop me from using the emergency room for anything except life threatening in the future.

Poor experience. They suck. And didnt offer dinner or breakfast. I was staying with my grandma and no one offered a blanket or pillow or somewhere to sleep. So i stayed up all night and couldnt sleep.

Absolutely amazing experience! The doctors, nurses, and staff made us feel very comfortable and were very attentive. If we go for baby # 2, Alta Bates will definitely be our go to hospital!

AVOID AT ANY COST!! Utterly useless, rude, and unprofessional staff. You will NOT get sufficient medical care. Better drive a few miles to another medical center which is more competent.
