This vet clinic made a big impression on me. Ive actually discussed how good it is several times to people as an example of an outstanding business. All of the staff and veterinarians put me at ease and treated me and my cat as honored guests. Dr. Dave Shuman is the owner. I always feel like he is very scientific and really looks at my cat with all his attention. He is extremely personable and professional. He has a great amount of expertise and I always trust his thinking process to make the best decision. You can see him thinking deeply and broadly about all the variables, including your animals comfort. One time my cat had a cat cold (respiratory infection). He examined my cat, which is amazing to watch, because he seems to do it so intelligently. He weighed the variables and decided it was best to do nothing, and the best thing was to not interfere and let the body take care of it. I thought that was a good example of how he thinks broadly and makes the best decision. I have taken my cat to see Dr. Shuman several times, and Ive always been more than happy with his service. He always wears a tie, stands up straight, looks fully calm and awake, and speaks very clearly. He seems to work with a perfect balance of science and compassion. On one of the walls inside the office there is an article about Dr. Shuman. He is able to do amazing things. The article is about how he treated a dog whos skin had been eaten off by a vulture in the mountains of Bonny Doon. Dr. Shuman knew how to pool his own and his colleagues expertise to stretch the remaining skin around the dog over about a 1 year period. Dr. Shuman was also once voted Veterinarian of the Year. The other doctors are also fantastic. Dr. Craig Himmelright is an excellent vet and he uses humor to brighten things up. Take your pet to this vet

i called multiple times and got the referral specialist, sue, who is gruff and stern. then i got in touch with the doctor who said he had plenty of experience in handling the procedure i was seeking. then, he changed his mind and said he didnt want to do the work because he didnt feel comfortable after all. what happened to all that experience??? leaves a person wondering if theyll say what they need to to get you in there? also, after weeks of trying to get in touch and being generally ignored by the staff and doctor, given incorrect advice that other doctors were shocked by re: vaccines, i have to say that this vets office gets a vote of no confidence - not to mention seemingly high prices and gruff/ negligent service.

We have had our dogs with Dr. Shuman since he first came to Santa Cruz. We have found the staff at Westside Animal Clinic to uniformly helpful, pleasant and knowledgable. Dr. Shuman has seen us through the loss of several of our dogs due to age and/or disease and has always done his best for the dogs and also for us. We love our dogs and are grateful to have a veterinarian in whom we can fee the utmost confidence. They get the same kind of care that we would demand for our selves.
