Yes, it is a beautiful clean hospital but the staff and doctors I have encountered are completely ignorant and rude. I feel bad complaining because of the other reviews where numerous people have actually DIED from their impompetence and I sincerely hope those families follow up with legal action! If you need names of good lawyers, contact me. I know many! My experience was not one of life or death, just a severely infectious skin condition on my hands that I just could not live with for another day so I went to the ER after calling them first to ensure they have the equipment there in the ER to diagnose the condition ( i.e. a microscope). I knew exactly what I had by research and my prior medical education. I was assured that they could help me. Upon entering the ER, I again posed the same question to the intake personnel. They told me the triage nurse would know. Then the triage nurse came. (I forgot to get his name. To identify him I can only explain him as a very dark skin-colored male with a strong islander accent). He was extremely rude and condescending yet kept a smile on his face throughout our encounter. Again I asked him the question, "do you have the proper equipment in the ER to diagnose my skin condition?" He kept evading me as did the manager-looking guy who came to me only looking for money and my insurance info. (Although he was very professional and nice about it. He was quite handsome as well). I kept saying "if you do not have the proper equipment, you will be unable to diagnose me and we are all wasting time and I am just giving your facility tons of money for nothing. Do I just need to go to a dermatologist? If so, tell me now!" They all continued to evade me and kept saying "We do not know what the Dr. will do or say. DO you need to see a doctor or NOT?" Finally I gave in. The doctor entered. Young blonde in her 30s, Kristen Dunlap. She looked at my skin and said she could only guess that it was dermatitis. I had already received that diagnosis approximately a month ago and a prescription from my PCP to cure it. Of course, it did not work because it was not dermatitis! Back and forth the Dr and I expressed our disagreements. So I told her to go ahead and please take a skin sample and look at it under the microscope to confirm. Guess what, no microscope! Then I asked her about some other of my serious conditions I had just learned about a few days ago from blood tests. I asked her to draw blood to confirm or dismiss the tests that had indicated cancer as well as extremely dangerous thyroid levels. (I thought I should try to get a little something out of the thousands of dollars they were going to bill me for). The doc told me they could not even draw blood in the ER and were not equipped to do so. I have also heard that they cannot take X rays there either because they do not have a radiologist! So, What CAN they do in the ER at Bethesda West? Absolutely nothing I guess. I would NEVER reccommend going there! Ever! Even to my worst enemy! Go to JFK or West Boca where they have REAL ERs. Or you would get much better care by going to an Urgent Care facility. Even they can at least draw blood and take X-rays! So all that being stated, the Drs reccommendation was to "See a dermatologist". Ha! Since the previous prescription I had received from my PCP for her same "guess diagnosis" did not work, she said to put Vaseline on my hands and wear gloves and it would clear up. Ha! again. I told her I had done that exact thing for 2 months and it had just gotten worse. So, thats it. Huge waste of time and money! I hope that my insurance company will deny their bill after a letter from my attorney because they do not deserve 1 penny! To top it off completely, I went to a dermatologist today whom confirmed MY self diagnosis of the exact highly contagious condition I told the ER doc I had. She probably would still argue with me but now I have proof! Crazy! Where can you find a real doc in S Florida???

Frankly, I was hesitant about going to any emergency room. I remember spending five or six hours for an emergency room visit. Long waits in the reception area. Sitting in a treatment area. Filling out a mound of paperwork. In the past my experience only caused stress, seemingly making my condition worse. All of those bad memories were immediately gone because of the excellent experience I had at Bethesda West last weekend. I received one sheet of paper with a few questions. I was called in for treatment in ten minutes. The entire emergency room team was incredibly efficient, pleasant, personable and professional. They moved quickly and explained everything they were doing. They quickly did an MRI and the physician came in within a few minutes to explain my condition and the treatment and medications I would receive. He took the time to explain everything he saw in the scan, including a few conditions not related to my problem. He ordered an injection to relieve the pain quickly and three prescriptions, explaining the purpose of each one. Then I was given a discharge packet with complete information on my medical issue and the treatment plan. Bottom line: in and out in 90 minutes, complete understanding of the medical problem and on my way to relief. My concern that I had something serious prompted my visit. As it turned out, my condition was very painful but not serious. Bethesda West got it right and I appreciate the obvious planning, training and selection of outstanding medical professionals that make Bethesda West Emergency Room outstanding.
