THE TALE OF WOE: Jaw locked. Went to dentist and had painful x-rays done. Told I had a “little infection” in my tooth and I’d have to have it extracted by an oral surgeon. THE UH-OH FACTOR: Unfortunately, the following day, I began to get very sick and was riddled with pain; I thought my head would explode. I went to the E. R. where I learned I had a life threatening infection; as they explained it, “knocking at the door of my heart!” I was admitted to the hospital immediately! By then, I resembled the “Elephant Man,” with severe swelling, a high fever, etc. By Day Four, the wonderful staff and infectious disease doctors at South Lake Hospital had me feeling much better and looking normal once again. When released, I was told to get the tooth extracted… immediately. The defamation had hit the ventilation, folks. Bravery in a dentist’s chair does not describe me; not at all! ENTER THE HEROES: I called several oral surgeons, but finally spoke with a young lady named Yolanda. She was the only person I had called that showed sincere empathy to my fear without making me feel like an idiot for being a coward. She gave me price quotes, told me what was involved; the twilight sleep, etc. I reiterated again how terrified I was of dentists (to make sure they knew what they were “dealing” with). The appointment was made and I walked into Oral Facial Surgical Arts to meet this magical oral surgeon who would pull off this impossible feat; extraction from an extreme coward. Enter the magnanimous Dr. Achong. Dr. Achong was immediately likable in his demeanor, his knowledge, and his professionalism. He was very considerate of my physical and emotional pain and fear. Then, very gently, he said I had two infected teeth that needed to be extracted; there was a second abscess forming on the other side of my face as well. I felt the panic beginning to rise up inside, but he calmly continued explaining the procedure and assuring me with his words and tone that all would be well. The good Doctor had my trust by the end of the conversation. I was scheduled for the extractions the next day at 8:00 A.M. THE DAY OF RECKONING: My Mom and my sister came with me for support (and to drive me home). He came into the exam room, they gently inserted the I.V. for the sedation, and Doc said, “Good night!” The next thing I knew; “Badda-Bing; Badda-Bang; Buddafooko;” it was over and done with! I was amazed, to say the least. I followed all of the instructions; only liquids at first, then soft foods; I took my medications as directed. The healing process was amazing; I will tell you with all honesty, I did not suffer; not at all! Pain was so minimal; it was practically not there; I swear on my life! Talk about impressed!!! AND my jaw works again! My follow up appointment with Doctor Achong was a breeze; everything looked great and is healing well! Folks, I would go back to this doctor and his staff in a heart-beat! They are excellent people and excellent professionals! Trust me…when it comes to dentists, I am the epitome of cowardice; it goes back to my childhood with a bad dentist and I never forgot it. But Doctor Achong and his staff will earn your trust and your admiration as they did mine!

You know that great feeling you get when you have a big problem but you have a close family member that can easily fix it for you. No worries right! I have that very same feeling about Dr. Achong. I had a chipped wisdom tooth. Initially, there was no pain, so like many I ignored it. Eventually, I started to experience pain in waves. Oragel and painkillers helped at first, but the pain became excruciating. I dealt with this for a month and a half and a couple times had thought about going to the ER. A fellow coworker had recently had his wisdom teeth extracted and upon hearing about my tooth pain had recommended me to see Dr. Achong. In addition to him, other coworkers had suggested other local oral surgeons. Since Dr. Achongs closest office was 60 miles from where I reside, I researched many other local oral surgeons. I was not enthused with results and so I had decided, based on the recommendation of my friend/coworker and many positive reviews, that I would go see Dr. Achong. Even once my mind was made up I still decided to wait. My severe toothaches hadnt happened in a few days and despite a lot of good reviews and recommendations, the thought of going through with the oral surgery and the pain and the risks you hear of were not welcoming. Fast forward through one final wave of pain over a few days, I was on the phone monday and scheduled an eval for Thursday. Thursday came and went, I found out I needed 3 wisdom teeth removed and I was scheduled for the following monday. Procedure Day - I was sure that I was awake the whole time. I was in at 10 am and five minutes after lowering the chair I was being raised back up. I checked the time and it was 11 oclock. It wasnt until I felt that gauze was poking out of my mouth did I realize that it was all over! I could hardly believe it. I stayed the night at a friends nearby and drove to work the next morning. My only regret was that I waited so long to take care of my pain. If you are experiencing any toothaches and need to see an oral surgeon do not hesitate to see Dr. Achong. The 60 mile drive was worth it. He also worked with me financially as I did not have an in-network dental insurance plan. Without a doubt, I would send my family and closest friends Dr. Achongs way, because I know from experience, that theyd be in good hands.

Had a wisdom tooth removed "late in life" after more than a year of unexplained facial and jaw pain. Standard Xrays did not reveal anything, so I was referred to Dr. Achong for evaluation. After just one (high-tech!) Xray, the problem was discovered immediately and he recommended removal with sedation. BEST ADVICE EVER. They scheduled me a couple of days later (at my convenience!), then provided exquisite service from the moment I stepped in the door. Whisked to the back, not left in the waiting area to stew and worry.... Extremely helpful staff from the front desk to the insurance stop to the treatment rooms and right to my car. Had I known it would be this little discomfort, and so easy on the wallet, I would not have spent on minute worrying. Nor should you. If you have mouth pain, go see Dr. Achong. He is a pleasant guy who obviously knows his business. His staff is top notch, and his equipment state of the art. As a "major chicken" when it comes to needles and "surgery" of any sort, this entire process was a most comfortable one indeed--much less pain than I thought possible for "surgery." I am happy to report that, one week post-extraction, I was given the "all clear" to return to normal eating, brushing, "anything I want!" Interestingly, the pain that radiated from my wisdom tooth below the left eye (#17 is its official name) forward five teeth, with aching jaw problems for over a year that neither Ibuprofen nor Acetaminophen could control, was completely gone within days. I am already pain free. Only took the post-surg meds two days before the pain had subsided. Not a moments trouble at the incision site. Not even discomfort to eat. REMARKABLE!!! CALL THESE PEOPLE IF YOU NEED ORAL SURGERY!!!!
