I originally went to go see Dr. Jon when I started feeling shoulder pain while swimming my freshman year in college. The handful of other professionals I sought for help with my shoulder told me to stop swimming and that my swimming career was over because I was ‘not built for swimming.’ At my first appointment I remember Dr. Jon asked me, “What if I told you to stop swimming?” My response was, “I’m not going to,” he looked at my mom and she said, “Do whatever it takes to keep her in the pool.” And he did. We began doing exercises, and not only did he help strengthen my shoulder but we worked on everything literally from the ground up. He made sure I wore the right shoes, had the correct posture, and sleeping in a way that wouldn’t hurt my back and shoulders. I could really tell that he was also passionate about swimming and that was important to me that he also cared about the sport I loved. Dr. Jon came to my practices and worked with me and my coach with my technique in the water, and made sure I was doing everything on land and in the water to get better. Sure enough I hadn’t even been seeing him for a month and I was swimming without pain and completing all of my workouts. I was even dropping time at swim meets. Yes there were days that I would have pain and unable to swim my whole workout but it was rare and I was grateful for that. At my championship meet, on my last day I was swimming my 200 Fly and my shoulder finally had enough. I was unable to finish while moving both arms and my team pulled me out of the water. In the following months I had dozens of doctor visits and had an MRI and the results were that I had a labrum tear. The next week I scheduled surgery to fix it. The road to recovery began. Of course I wouldn’t have put the three years I had left of my college career in anyone else’s hands other than Dr. Jon. Slowly I gained rotation in my shoulder and started to gain strength. It was a tough battle but in just under two months I was in the water slowly doing a couple of laps. The next season I rebuilt all of my strokes and focused purely on technique. This time at the championship meet I broke two college records, in the 200 and 400 Medley Relay and I was the fly in both of them. I owe my whole college swimming career to Dr. Jon and not only wouldn’t still be in the pool, but continue to drop time like I am. I still have weekly appointments with him but it’s more for training and getting stronger and faster. Every time I come he always has something new to work on or show me. I have and would recommend him to anyone even if you aren’t a swimmer.

“Osteoarthritis of the hip. Once you can’t take the pain any longer, hip replacement surgery.” This from a Park Avenue orthopedist and multiple physical therapists in New York City, a Des Moines area orthopedic surgeon and the Mayo Clinic. Decent, well-meaning and competent people that all told me basically the same thing. Instinctually, that line of thinking wasn’t working for me. Then, very much by happenstance, I met Jon Schultz. He was rightfully direct about not having a solution for the missing cartilage in my hip, but he explained the concept of Postural Restoration. He was passionate in his belief that the tenets of Postural Restoration treatment would bring me relief. For over five years, I’ve moved up and down the pain scale, from a good day of “2” to bad days of “7” or “8”. Working with Jon for six weeks and I’m at “0” to “1” on the pain scale. The results of Jon’s treating me sort of feels like a miracle. Less than six months ago, surgery looked like the only option. Today, I’m confident that with Jon’s guidance, I can find a sustainable pattern of behavior that keeps the pain in check and substantially expands my mobility. Over the last six weeks, Jon has said to me a few times, “I wish I could have gotten ahold of you five years ago.” So do I Jon. I’d still have cartilage in my left hip. But I’m eternally grateful for where you have gotten me and look forward to continuing the journey. Your care and passion as a physical therapist is only outdone by your holistic approach to the lives of your clients. This country is bursting at the seams with people having musculoskeletal difficulties. It is heading toward epidemic proportions that at best cuts into productivity and GDP, and at worst creates an over-reliance on opioids resulting in abuse, addiction and even death. My experience working with Jon, a uniquely trained physical therapist, is that he quickly identified my compensatory patterns of movement and muscle imbalances. He developed an effective treatment regimen that addressed these issues and helped eliminate the source of my pain. Could physical therapists (like Jon) significantly reduce the burden of musculoskeletal disease and subsequent costs associated with treatment? I truly believe they could. One man’s opinion, but I strongly believe it to be true. The metropolitan area is fortunate to have someone like Jon among us. Dave Duggan Johnston, IA

Jon has evaluated and treated my 15 y.o daughter with much accuracy and benefit. Being a 3 sport athlete, she suffered last years track season with lower abdominal muscle pain with running the 1500 m. This pain would bring her to tears and devastate her as she is a successful runner. Additionally she has suffered with random knee, hip and foot pain during all sports. As a physical therapist myself, I have attended several courses involving Postural Restoration and not only value the approach but have seen the success with following these exercises. I chose to have Jon work with my daughter because outpatient orthopedics is an area which I no longer work. Since Dec 2015, Jon has identified faulty breathing and movement patterns and helped my daughter to properly move, run, compete and live in a way which uses her diaphragm, gluteal and hamstring muscles to their optimum ability. Because of Jons insight, knowledge and intervention, she is running track with minimal to no pain, has learned to properly breath and move to a higher capacity, and is learning key exercises, positions and warm-ups to take her performance to a higher level. So while we were hoping just to become "pain-free", Jon has shown us much more in the arena of strength and power. But even more importantly, I value Jons approach because it is helping my daughter to avoid many chronic pain issues down the road. By attaining a more aligned posture now, the stress and strain of athletics will only strengthen her frame, rather than tear it down. Postural Restoration is not a band aid, rather gets to the core of the issue and identifies precise muscle groups which need strengthened, lengthened or given rest. Jons insight and passion is remarkable and I would recommend him to anyone having pain.

So, first things first: I highly recommend Jon as a physical therapist. Hes one of those enigmatic individuals that possess the intellectual scaffolding and ingenuity needed to correct the root of your physical issues. Post-surgery PT needed? Jon does that. Achy back pain? Jon helps with it. Jaw issues? Hip issues? Shoulder issues? Knee issues? Foot issues? Jon help with it all. And he does it on a 1x1 basis. This isnt a factory-line PT shop, folks. But, enough about old age. Lets talk about wants for a moment. Maybe your daughters 40-yd dash always put her in 2nd or 3rd place. Maybe your son is stuck at 86 (5 over par). Maybe hes pitching in the low 70s when he wants to be in the high 90s. Maybe your only squatting 225 when you want to be in the 400s. Or, maybe you latest sprint triathlon split was 2h 30min when you want to be around 1h 20min. Maybe youre only coasting when you really want to be leading. Well, Jon can help with that. I could go through the Jons intellectual resume and the sort of equipment he has access to but all of that is secondary until you decide that youre ready to fix the problem instead of just "dealing with it". Pain? Performance? Success? Jon can help with that. Schedule a consultation, see where you stand and make your decision. Good luck.
