I had a very similar experience to C with my cat. My cat is a little over a year old and is sweet and outgoing. He is so sweet and outgoing that even at this strange and stressful place, he was friendly and affectionate to the tech and the vet - at first. They took my cat in the back to take a couple samples and give him a few injections, and my cat started screaming at the top of his lungs like Ive never heard him scream before. After a few times, I was about to go back there and stop them because it was so bad, but then a tech came back and told me that he was being difficult and they were having a hard time doing these routine procedures on a 9 lb cat. She said they had been trying to draw blood and couldnt get it for several tries, couldnt do the other test they were going to do, and could barely get the injections into him. She said they had three people on my one cat and couldnt finish everything they planned! They brought my cat back to me, and his leg was COVERED IN BLOOD where they finally were able to get it. The tech actually YELLED at my cat when he jumped down and tried to run away instead of getting in his carrier. I dont care how frustrated you are with an animal, that is not professional. These people should be able to handle large, aggressive dogs, and they cant handle a little cat? When I was checking out, he actually growled at one of the techs through his carrier, the same one he had been purring for earlier. Ive never heard him growl even once before, and I have taken him to other vets with no issue. When I got him home and was able to comfort him I realized that his entire haunch was bruised purple where they had taken the blood, and he had also lost control of his bowels of all things. My cat has NEVER been like this before. Last but not least, they do nickel and dime you to death. It was $230 for my one cat, and all the vet could come up with was that he had an ambiguous "infection." They sent me home with three different medications, including eye drops even though the vet said he couldnt see anything wrong with his eyes. I was also charged for procedures the vet did during the initial diagnostic exam, which has never happened to me at a vet before, and he did not warn me that things like checking his eyes for injury would be an extra $20. Im not cheap, I believe that my pets deserve proper care no matter the cost, but it is the principle of not being warned and being charged for things that should have either been included in the cost of the exam or were probably unnecessary.

I cannot speak highly enough about the Michigan Avenue Animal Hospital. Heres my story. I adopted Oliver, a 6 year old orange cat in October of 2011. After losing my 10 year old Mr. Misty due to kidney failure, I was ready for another friend. Oliver was a rescue from a cat hoarders house, and it was clear that he wasnt properly cared for. He had to have teeth pulled before I brought him home, and he clearly didnt get enough attention. Hes the most cuddly cat Ive ever encountered. In early August, Oliver was having trouble urinating. It lasted a few days, and I took him in, as he was getting worse and worse. He had developed crystals in his urine and his urethra was completely blocked. He was becoming toxic from the ammonia, and he was getting worse by the hour. I had an appointment at another vet the next day, but I didnt think hed make it until appointment time. He was dizzy, couldnt walk, couldnt eat, and wanted to drink (but that would have made it worse). I rushed him to the Michigan Ave Animal hospital, where the Doctor A. and Dr. Dhaliwal took care of him swiftly by putting a catheder in so he could drain, and keeping him overnight. Because he was so toxic, and his kidney damage levels were so remarkably high, we were all prepared for the worst overnight. By the next day, Oliver was still with us. Lucid, alert, urinating, but weak. With the IV fluids flushing through his system, his kidney levels came back to normal in a few days. He stayed for over a week, as we waited for his urethra to heal, so he would stop "leaking" (due to urethra roughness from the crystals). The leaking didnt stop, so they had to preform a PU (Perineal Urethra). They basically removed Olivers penis to shorten the urethra. The procedure usually works, but it is major surgery. Oliver had the procedure, and came home. He had to wear his "cone of shame" for 14 days, to protect the stitches, but Im glad to say that hes home, the stitches are out, hes cleaning himself and back to his super-cuddly and affectionate self. Thank you so much to the whole team. Doctors, technicians, assistants. Without you, I would have lost two kitties in a year and Im so thankful that you were able to save my baby!

I came here over a year ago after my new rescue dog seemed under the weather, couldnt tell how serious- his behavior when sick was still unfamiliar to me. He was taken to the closest vet in ypsi- which was our first mistake. The entire experience proved that they were trying to falsely diagnose my dog with an "extremely severe and rare spinal condition" that would require several surgeries and to pump him full of drugs. The doctor- "Dr.Will" (literally on his name tag, no last name presented, no way to search his credentials) guided me through their X-ray and told me all of these Surgeries my dog would need or he would die. Literally said that out loud, mind you, my dog had been in his care for 2 hours. It was as if he was looking for this diagnosis and was excited he has an opportunity to push it on a patient. I told him I would feel more comfortable gettin a second opinion before concluding at this serious and expensive diagnosis and he snapped at me, essentially accusing me of not caring if my dog lives or Dies- which is the most manipulative way to make a sale. Buy our pharmacuticuls or your dog will Die and it will be your fault! He got several hundreds of dollars out of me using that scare tactic. I talked to humane society and another vet office to talk about what happened and what drugs they had put my dog on and the only response I got was "Take your dog off those immediately, they dont have enough information about your dogs condition to make that decision. Take them off the medicine as soon as possible or it can cause permanent damage". Upon a follow up appointment at a legitimate veterinarian, none of the hypothesis proposed by "dr.will" were correct, he misread the X-ray, pumped my dog with dangerous painkillers and sedatives and caused severe emotional stress on me and my animal. I will NEVER go back here and if you want proper Emergency service for your animal, stay far away. It is truly evil and dangerous to abuse animal medical care to make a profit.

I am a foster for Great Dane Rescue, Inc. My foster Oskar needed OCD surgery on his right shoulder badly and Dr. Dhaliwal at Michigan Avenue Animal Hospital was recommended to us by one of our adopters. He had the most reasonable pricing, was very good about working with our rescue regarding billing for the procedure and was accommodating to my schedule since I was traveling quite a distance to take Oskar there on my own time.I must say after meeting Dr. Dhaliwal I was so very impressed with his compassion and felt that he truly cared about his patients. After Oskars surgery, when they brought him out he had no limp and a very small incision...nothing at all what I was expecting. When we took him in to have his sutures removed Dr. Dhaliwal chatted with us about his background, his family, and why he does what he does. He was interested in us, our rescue and especially Oskar. Oskar continues to be a changed, happy, healthy pup and I cannot say enough nice things about Dr. Dhaliwal and his staff. Oskar is now in adoptable condition thanks to Dr. Dhaliwal. If you truly want a compassionate, caring experience for your furry family members you need to contact Michigan Avenue Animal Hospital regardless of how far you live because I honestly feel it is worth the trip and I will be taking my future fosters, as well as my own animals there if the need arises.
