Im going to be honest, I hate going to the dentist, but the dentist I had in Michigan was very gentle and always took away any anxiety I had. This was not the case at Aspen Dental on Valley River Way in Eugene. I had the free first exam (X-rays and consultation only) last week and it took two hours and fifteen minutes just for the X-rays and a short consultation with the dentist. At the end I sat with someone who drew up a financial agreement for work that needs to be completed. The people very nice but the factory line feel is not good for someone who has dental anxiety. The wait was not worth the free exam, in my opinion. The X-ray process was grueling and, while this is the part that would normally cause the least amount of anxiety, it was like torture. I have never known dental X-rays to be painful before. It took SO LONG and the tech had to redo several of them because the device that they put into your mouth is awkward and has sharp edges (I have a small mouth so they couldnt even complete all the X-rays needed for a complete exam). The technician that worked on my was very nice but I would not call this procedure gentle. She became a bit flustered because I did, but she was lovely and nice throughout. I had to finally tell her that I wanted to stop because that horrible device was causing so much pain and because it had cut me underneath my tongue. She ended up using the smallest attachment, which helped, along with some little sticky pads that made it possible for me to bite down on them. The other part that I found very disturbing was the cleanliness, or lack thereof. The fact that the tech would lay the device onto the common counter space in the room without protecting it from touching that space was quite bothersome and I should have said something about it, but I didnt. They did not clean it before working on me. The part of the device that went into my mouth not only touched the counter space, but it was also touched many times by her gloved hands--the same hands that she would leave the room with to operate the X-ray machine. I dont trust that it was a sterile atmosphere, and I had open sores on the roof of my mouth. I need some work done--I knew I had an infected and cracked molar, and I know it needs to be extracted. Im on antibiotics which has helped. I suspected an impacted wisdom tooth, and they confirmed that. That was the only good outcome--getting an answer. I intend to take that to another dentist for a second opinion and for my cleaning. If the X-rays were painful and nerve-wracking, I can only imagine what the cleanings are like.

There were a few nice people there but professionalism is not there at all. I needed a partial. This process took several months due to that they lost my imprints for the partial while at the lab. They didnt know what lab they were at. Then they didnt fit so I went back in to get them fitted and they didnt get it right so they set up another fitting appointment. Went in for that one and it still isnt comfortable(very painful still to this day and it has been over 6 months). I told them that and they said that I was going to have to pay for anymore fittings. While I have insurance and paid them in full, the amount that they said I owed, at my appointment(just under a grand out of my pocket plus what my insurance paid), they turned me into collection for $25.00 6 months later. I called them about the collections and they said "oh I see you paid what we told you so I will wipe the $25.00 off your account". And she said oh lets get you back in for a fitting and that I wont be charged. Yep right. They also made me appointments and I showed up and they said "oh we should have called to let you know that we cant do anything at your appointment because your partials never came in". Ok,with the price of fuel a call would have been nice so that I wouldnt drive all the way into town for an appointment that couldnt be kept. I had to ask how to care for the partial they said nothing to me until after I asked and they told me I should have received a starter kit, which this is the first I have heard about. So in turn at this point my partials still dont fit, they create a lot of pain and soreness in my mouth that I cant wear them. I keep trying to wear them, but I wear them for 4-5 hours in 1 day and my mouth and gums are so soar for 3 days after. They dont even stay in place. SUCKS to pay for something that doesnt work. I should have just taken that $949.00 out of my pocket and flushed it down the toilet plus the $924.00 that the insurance paid. Painfully Unhappy!!

Yeah they do dental but as far as organization and functionality as a professional office goes they seem to have no clue on where to start. My first visit here I was forgotten in the exam room for almost a half hour. Once they realized I was still sitting there they quickly proceeded to finish the exam and send me into the waiting room to review my insurance information. I informed the receptionist who and what I was waiting for which was relayed to the accounts representative verbally. Instead of finishing what he was doing and helping me he instead chit chatted for 20 minutes with the receptionist. I reminded them I was still waiting and he apologized profusely for forgetting about me. If that was the only day I had a problem I would have probably not shared my experience on the web. I have arrived today for my follow up visit and once again they wanted to review my insurance. When the same receptionist as my first visit opened my file, after apologizing for the other patients file being open on the desk they sat me at along with a stack of other patients files next to it, she realized they had not contacted my insurance carrier to figure out what coverage I had. At the business I manage which holds far leas sensitive information than a dental office does about guests, I would terminate the people who would be responsible for situations like this occurring.

My New Patient exam ended up being divided into two trips because of the length of time I had to wait around the first visit, and other time consuming events during that visit. The second visit didnt go much faster. Its a good thing they dont charge for the new patient exam, because they make up for it in what they want to charge for other services that you may not actually need. I wont be going back. While the staff is friendly, several of them acted very unprofessional and treated me like a circus freak because of my mandibular tori. I also believe the hygienist lied about the type of cleaning I need, and falsified the exam by claiming I have several points of bleeding which I do not have. Instead of offering to take her time during cleaning to make sure it was a pleasant visit, she stated that shed be using a shot to numb a few areas. I have never required this is my life, and I dont believe its required now. Im going to see my old dentist in a different state during my visit, and have already received a few recommendations of other dentists in this area with much better reputations. Despite my dislike of the policies of Aspen Dental, I really like Dr. H. She is very nice, very professional, and honest.
