WellSpan has hijacked the good name of Philhaven and has it brought down to an inferior in-patient facility. I was there a couple of times before the take over....WellSpan got rid of all qualified psych techs and replaced them with a good number (not all) but majority of very inexperienced students or those that have just graduated from college...(I was told by many psych techs that they were only there so they could pay off student loans.) some with degrees not even in this field. That particular psych tech worked night shift and spent her time coloring, watching movies, and texting...in fact, another very good psych tech came in and did her work of bed checks, because she forgot...My experience has been being taunted by one of the psych techs and the same psych tech taunting a patient that was in serious distress. Many psych techs are on their lap tops watching movies, listening to music, and just surfing the web. Many also spend their time coloring and not interacting with patients in need. Most psych techs behave like they do not want to be there and we patients are invisible or their job is to babysit.... I was there for 5 days and two of those days my "contact" never came to talk to me. On the fifth day of my stay was when I found out that my insurance company only approved 3 days of my stay...I was never given a choice to make the decision to stay the additional 2 days. I was also encouraged to stay through the early part of the following week... in spite of the fact my insurance company would not cover the additional days. Of course, I left...and in a worse state than when I entered. I did write a letter of grievance and had a meeting with Customer Service and the Head of the Psych Techs...I can only hope some changes have been made and patients are getting the help they desperately need. I have recently found a place that is offering the care and respect that I deserve. I am headed on a better track...in my opinion stay away from any WellSpan provider...there is a severe deficit in the care you will receive.

I was really treated like garbage by the entire Philhaven staff. They talk a good game of "being all Christian and stuff," but that is pure HYPOCRISY. ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS $$MONEY$$. They do NOT care about your mental health. The entire staff, save maybe for a few doctors, are EXTREMELY JUDGMENTAL. They ignore you when you are standing at the front desk, waiting and waiting and waiting for some "customer service," which they do not ever give, and this happens even when there is NOBODY in line! Then, the mean secretaries look up at you with an irritated "why are you bothering me" kind of look. The worst part about Philhaven is their billing department. PHILHAVEN WILL RIP YOU OFF AT THE FIRST CHANCE THEY GET. They erroneously billed my $100s of dollars for "services" I never agreed to. Then they blamed it on the billing codes because they are too dishonest to actually man-up and admit they love to rip you off. I had a billing dispute with them and it took over 3 months for me to get a finally get a refund. I would never, ever, ever take my child or loved one to Philhaven unless I was prepared to have them come out even more sick than when they went in. Philhaven is the opposite of "health care." They really could care less about your health, not to mention they could really care less about my mental health. All they cared about was whether or not my account was paid up and how long they could delay my care by not scheduling me in… saying how "busy" the doctors were. In the meantime, all you see the doctors do is wander the hallways with a confused look on their face. And oh yeah… Philhaven does not return phone calls either. They make it impossible to get in touch with your "doctor." I understand that medical care in the U.S. is not that great (we rank about #37 in the world), but even considering this, Philhaven is soooo bad that unless you want to be treated like crap and get ripped off, do NOT go there and do NOT refer a patient to Philhaven.

We all have good and bad single experiences with companies and I am sorry to hear there are negative experiences here so substantial that ripping them apart online is the only option. I do agree their reception staff could value the customer service mindset a bit more, but that said, overall my experience has been great (other than the reams of physical paper needed to enter in). First, if your kid is at the level of need for Philhaven, you likely qualify for medical assistance to help pay for it. Get the help - dont blame a doctor for actually asking for payment for services rendered. Second, here in Lancaster almost every ER refers mental health patients to Philhaven over any other because of their care. My son does well there and comes out better than he went in. Mental health is not an easy thing to address and EVERY case is unique. They will not turn their behavior overnight, but they will provide the steps and the practice for your kid to work through his own issues. Its up to you to own that and continue it at home.

I recently attended Philhavens Mental Health First Aid training class. The instructors, Jayne and John, were awesome. They were engaging, knowledgeable, and passionate about teaching us how to help people who are in mental/emotional distress. Their team teaching approach was very effective in helping us apply what we were learning and kept us engaged throughout the eight hour class. As organizer of this event, I have heard nothing but praise for Jayne and John from the 30+ attendees of this class. Each person Ive spoken with regarding the class has found it useful to them in both their professional and personal lives. Thanks Jayne and John for investing yourselves in this good work. And many thanks to Philhaven for investing in our communities mental health by providing this top-notch training at no cost to the public.

Its been 4 sessions and my doctor cant diagnose me. Half of the sessions are helping the doctor understand the Phil-haven computer system. For $160/session, thats just ridiculous. Why does everything have to be excessively documented in a database? That just screams the opposite of confidentiality. Every time I go in my diagnosis changes, and every time I talk my doctor cant understand what Im trying to convey. Its almost like if someone doesnt meet a text-book standard they try to cram that person into one. It just utterly baffles them, but instead of trying to do the right thing and take a moment to learn, they just take the lazy way and try to fit you into a pre-cut mold so they wont have to cut a new one. Not recommended to anybody.

I was placed here as a teenage girl. I am a proud voice of SIA (survivors of institutional abuse). Philhaven is the reason why. I lived off campus at their crossroads home. A home it was not. I was physically, emotionally, and even sexually abused by the staff. Luckily it has been sold and is now turned into a bed and breakfast. If only walls could talk no one would want to spend their money to stay there. The hurt and pain of the girls that once where forced to lived there probably haunts that bed and breakfast now. I feel bad for the children that get sent to philhaven and for their blind guardians or parents that think its the best thing. Hopefully it has changed for the better but I highly doubt it!
