The Federal Drug Administration strongest warning for a medicine is called a black box warning The antibiotic Avelox or generic form named moxifloxacin has received this warning for possible damage to ones tendons . This damage can be permanent. It can also cause severe or permanent nerve damage to arms and legs or complete nervous system. There are many other extreme side effects such as hallucinations seizures, confusion and rare thoughts of suicide. The CVS pharmacy literature that accompanies this drug states “Discuss the risks and benefits with your Dr. before using this medicine” From speaking with a few other health officials and reading other reviews from several reputable medical websites there seems to be a significant consensus that this antibiotic, because of the severe and permanent damage risks should be used only when the severity of the illness would require such. I have been a patient of Dr. Dorrell for around 4 years without incident. He has treated me for minor health issues and twice for back issues involving tendons, muscle and nerve damage. I also went to an orthopedic back surgeon and was diagnosed with back disease and above issues. I saw Dr. Dorrell for a sore throat, congestion and cough. He swabbed for flu and strep which both came back negative. I had no fever and some minor wheezing with my cough. He gave me a steroid and this above antibiotic. After picking up the antibiotic at pharmacy and reading the warnings on it which also included the facts that severe reactions are more probable in people over 60 or people that are taking a steroid and the fact that he knew I already had muscle and tendon issues I decided to call and discuss this medicine with him. I will be 69 next month I called back the same day and was told by receptionist I would have to talk to nurse but they were very busy taking care of other patients. I received a call next morning and after sharing my concerns I was told that the doctor said that was what I was getting and for her to tell me he didn’t care what other info I had read or heard. I pushed back and told her that this medicine was way out of my comfort level and I needed some resolve. She said she would talk to the doctor and they could only deal with this in between new patients and she had no Idea when I would get an answer. I then shared with her that I would call the pharmacy in an hour and a half and if he hadn’t called in a new antibiotic I would have to find a new way to receive a safer one. She suddenly found the time to talk to Dr. Dorrell a second time and called me back in 15 min. and said he submitted a new prescription and gave me the ultimatum that I had 30 days to find a new doctor. I never once was allowed to talk to the doctor, I was treated with a very disrespectable attitude and combative rhetoric by the nurse and the content of the messages she relayed to me from Dr. Dorrell. So much for doctor patient relationships. In my opinion that operation is a one-way street that desperately needs an adult in charge. I would not recommend the Medical center on Padre Island Dr. With Dr. Tom Dorrell and his nurse because of some of the worst customer friendly behavior and for what I consider serious lack of judgment in prescribing a very high risk antibiotic for something that didn’t come close to requiring it and wasn’t willing to discuss it. I at least deserved an explanation.

I was brought to this office after fainting, I was treated by referring me to a neuro specialist, and also medication to treat anxiety. I communicated to Dr. Dorrell that a daily medication was not of interest to me, and he prescribed Ativan, saying I could take it off-and-on as needed. In over a year I filled the script 3 times, using it as a security to have handy should any feeling of anxiety arise. My recent request to fill the script I was told to come in and pay for a visit for the refill and a drug screen. I was willing to come in for a physical exam and pay for the drug screen, however, they would not do that. It would be billed separately, I would be seen for the refill at an office rate of $90 to $142 (not one visit was $90 - hence skeptical questioning) and $45 for the drug screen and any physical exam would be separate. I never had what I would consider to be a good experience with Dorrell, and always felt rushed and unclear what was wrong. I believe his practice is designed to be rushed for billing purposes. Im sure most are, but this was just too obvious for me.

I seen Dr. Dorrell recently, the office staff was very friendly. Dr. Dorrell however was not. His treatment of me was adequate. His bedside manner was hurried and rushed and abrupt. If you want a personal doctor who takes his time and talks to you as a person instead of talking at you Dr. Dorrell is not the right doctor for you. I certainly left his office with the feeling that he didnt care about me as a person or as a patient. He cared about the bottom line. It is really sad that some doctors still have the "GOD" mentality. We are all human beings and should be treated as such. As a practicing nurse I was really surprised at his attitude I would not reccomend him to any of my older patients. I feel they need more TLC than he has to offer. I have always said that when I am in the medical field just the money and not for my patients it is time for me to move on.

No one wants to spend 2 hours at the doctors office...Dr. Dorrell gets you in and out and on with your life or back home if youre not feeling well! His office staff is very nice and helpful. Hes not a bubbly, talkative doctor and his bedside manner isnt lovey-dovey, hold your hand and tell you youll be all right. He talks business with you, gets your symptoms and vitals, lets you know what he thinks is going on and provides the treatment. That is him doing his job. I am happy to go to him--even during a work day--because I know I wont be waiting an hour to see him. Highly recommend.

Dr. Dorrell is an excellent physician. He is a very concerned caring physician. He may not be all bubbly but I dont go to him to be entertained. I go to him because he is an excellent physician and works very hard to provide quality healthcare to his patients. His staff is equally talented and dedicated, and go out of their way to help with all my medical needs. My regret is having to find another doctor when we moved. I will miss the care I received at the Medical Center and would recommend anyone to go there.

Dr. Dorrell was great in treating me with my medical problems but the staff is very unprofessional and rude they will not listen to anything that you need to say and will not help with any needs that need to be handled. Will not be going back I would rather bleed out in the street than have to deal with the staff. I do not recommend you waste your time or money there because its not the care of the patients that should be first its all about the amount of money they can make off of you as a patient.
