I went in for my annual physical at Smithson Valley Family Medicine. Afraid of the typical experience that one often gets in the medical industry, I asked repeatedly (almost to the point of embarrassment) if services the doctor said I needed would be covered by my insurance. I was assured they would be covered 100%. A month later I received a bill for one of the services the office assured would be covered by my policy. I called Smithson Valley Family Medicine to get to the bottom of this. I was treated horribly. I spoke to Gloria the first time and she refused to offer me any decent customer service skills or any help or direction to resolving this bill. Shemine (sp?) was the next person I spoke with and by far the absolute worst interaction with this office. She also refused to help me with my bill and lacked MAJOR tact and customer service. When asked her name she adamantly refused to give me her last name or spell her first name. After Shemine happily accepted that I will be finding a new doctor she proceeded to hang up on me. This is a disgusting way to run a business. Smithson Valley Family Medicines office staff is a detriment to their business. I have a decent insurance policy, this office just cost them a ton of insurance billing by losing me as a patient. People have a right to inquire when presented with a bill, so why does medical staff act offended when you exercise your right. If a Doctor was sent a bill for X amount of dollars that he did not agree with, I almost guarantee a business would hear from said doctor. Family Medicine, Hospitals, Medical Offices, etc. are a BUSINESS. We have options. Do yourself a favor and keep looking for your next Family Physician.

In my experience, The providers in this clinic look for whatever problem with their patients that will allow them to charge the highest fees to our Insurance and actually refuse to provide comprehensive medical care! Based on my recent experience, the protocol of the medical staff are more focused on how to get the most money out of our insurance than meeting the needs of their patients. NOT RECOMMENDED IF YOU WANT TO GET QUALITY CARE I made an appointment for my husband and I to receive a complete physical assessment and was very disappointed with quality and level of care given to me by John Abshier, PA-C and my husband by Dr. Matthew Nicola. My appointment was less than 5 minutes with John Abshier who was not interested in my medical history, why I was prescribed medications and just added another drug! I did not go to see a New Provider to continue being loaded up with medications, I need a doctor who will take the time to figure out what is causing my chronic pain and work with me to resolve the problem. My husband recently had his 5th bout with Kidney Stones and needed to see a doctor to provide some type of preventative plan. When Dr. Matthew entered the room, he asked a couple questions about back pain then began a series of strength tests on my husband to determine his lower back problem! That is NOT why we made our appointment, and when he asked for labs to be drawn and for kidney function to be reviewed Dr. Matthew replied, "That will have to be another appointment. I can only bill your insurance for one code (whatever that means)".

My wife and I have been treated by Drs Vreeke and Niccola every since moving to this area over 12 years ago. We have seen the practice expand to include additional administrative staff, nurses and PAs. With only very minor and very temporary admin glitches, we have been extremely happy with the courtesy, efficiency and medical treatment. Ive been particularly pleased by both doctors referrals for specialised treatments. Additionally, weve never been blind sided by unexpected or misstated charges or insurance issues. The staff has always been good about this type of research and clarification of coverages. Im particularly impressed by two other characteristics: - Very seldom any major delay in meeting scheduled appointment times (very seldom more than 15 minutes). - In spite of the above, both doctors, their nurses and the PAs take as much time as we need to tell of our medical issues and then, to explain and advise for their treatment All in all, courteous, caring and efficient. My adult son is new to the area and is now under their care and is equally complimentary. Brian P Burke

This is a clinic, not a family medicine practice. If you are looking for comprehensive care, look somewhere else. You dont see the same provider when you do go. It can be a PA or MD, but you never know. They dont respond to Rx refill requests and are more focused on getting you to come back multiple times for different diagnosis codes so they can bill the maximum to you and your insurance company. Not a lot options out this way, hopefully that will change.

I had a really good experience here! Receptionist, nurse, and doctor were all friendly and pleasant. Doctor was very personable, did a thorough exam, asked a lot of questions, and was very patient with my 3 kids whom were in the room with me. Even though they ran extremely behind (more than an hour after my appt time) and I was the last appointment of the day the doctor took his time and didnt rush at all. I was very satisfied with my care.

Had appointment yesterday and was informed that they no longer are contracting out with our care provider. Exam room wait was around 20 minutes. Did not like the personality of the nurse who took my vitals. Needless to say, I will not be returning. I did like the NP, though. They need to brush up on their phone answering skills, too!!
