I have always thought well of Mad River but my most recent interaction with the facility and the nursing staff was down right disgusting. My dad had a stroke around 5pm. The ambulance took him to the hospital and that is where the lack of compassion and the realization that the health care around here is a flat joke and can only assume that the low end doctors get placed in this area. They released him back home a couple of hours later, and said he was drunk. He had two drinks with a big dinner and he is a 240 lb man. My father for 14 hours walked around the house falling and hurting himself multiple times from the loss of motor skills from the stroke and was only then that I decided to act like a nurse from Mad River and google tests to check for a stroke. He definitely had signs so we called the ambulance at 4am to get him back to the hospital. It took 5 emts to barely get my dad to the ambulance, almost dropping him in the driveway, then tells us all that nobody can ride with him. My dad has around 100 lbs on me and I was able to get him from the livingroom to his room on more then one occasion during all of this. No worries... we get to the hospital and the nurses are cracking jokes with each other, smirking, watching my dad try to clean up his own feces and not do anything to help, make comments about our "redneck family" and they know that family means everything to rednecks, down to the group of cackling hens of nurses grouped around the camera from the high risk camera room that my dad was in, saying things like "its pretty funny if you watch if for awhile" and nasty things of that nature not aware that another family member was right there watching them. At some point they told our family that the hospital is a business and we try to get people in and out as fast as we possibly can. The physical therapist is 80 years old and just had her own hip replacement and she was the one left to care for my father? Besides a couple of very sweet and caring nurses 85% of them were a sick joke and should be ashamed of themselves. Everybody deserves to be treated with respect and especially in a field where people are putting their lives in your hands, the last thing they need are some heartless, shallow people that took a six week program to call themselves a professional. If you cant take peoples lives seriously, find a different job. By the grace of God my dad recovered way faster and stronger then expected. For anybody that has a loved one at this hospital or are looking into care here, I advise you find another location this facility needs some serious work and the uneducated, repulsive employees are the first step needing change.

I have visited here 3 times since living in arcata for 2 months on vacation. My primary care doctors are in los angelus and Medford Oregon I have 2 severe illnesses that cause massive amounts of pain and neurological issues along with kidney problems. So the first time I thought they were nice enough the doctor was short and had a accent I couldnt understand well. They said I was pregnant I insisted on an ultrasound to check the placement of the pregnancy since I was bleeding and in so much pain. He said they couldnt see it on the ultrasound I left unable to walk or drive well. The very next day I called a obgyn and got seen immediately only to find out the pregnancy was placed wrong and had to be terminated. The second visit I was treated by a different doctor for kidney infection he was much better than the first doctor. On my last visit yesterday at 10:15 am o saw the same do tor as the first time for severe vomiting and diarrhea along with heat flashes and body shaking during the episode I was laying on the floor puckering and pooping all over unable to do anything but scream. As soon as I could drive myself to hospital I did. They moved me to a room fast then the doctor came in and said " I saw you in January and the other doctor just saw you nothing can be wrong if you say this has been happening 6 months and you didnt mention it then". BEFORE I EVEN GOT A CHANCE TO TALK TO HIM. He told me they couldnt do anything for me unless I wanted blood tests. I was very upset due to the experience I had causeing me to seek medical treatment. I ask for another person to speak with and he sent in the nurse and the head nurse both who said that nothing was wrong with me. I asked the nurse " WHAT does he think I am?! A crackhead?!" She just looked at me funny. I have been discriminated against severely by this hospital due to the clothing I wear ( very expensive undyed hemp and bamboo clothing) and the purse I carry. I even told the nurse " I dont know whats wrong or what helps Im not on any drugs and I dont want and god dam pain medication I just want help". to make it worse for them I called my specialist who works at UCLA he called the another hospital and I had my husband drive me there they did abdominal tests and found severe swelling and lumps in my bowels and intenstine. The doctor obviously knew what he was doing because "absolutely nothing is wrong" I only have to spend a few days i the hospital to recover. I will be complaining to the hospital along with many other people when someone comes in and gets refused treatment due to "I think shes a druggie" is not right.

When they are good they are very good and when they are bad they are very bad and unapologetic...This is a sad and frustrating review for me to write because I am torn. Mad river has an amazing nursing staff in their ER, and medical surgical units. They have terrific hospitalist team and good diagnostic technicians. BUT the hospital has quality consistency issue. To be clear, There are some ER doctors at Mad River that are stellar. However, I have found that other ER docs are rude, and make judgements that are incorrect and costly. On more than one occasion I have been misdiagnosed at Mad river, only to go to St Josephs and have them do the necessary tests and come back with dramatically different results. In one recent incident, I was not given the test I knew I needed to diagnose a raging infection. I ended up at St Josephs the next day Where I was diagnosed properly. When I have attempted to talk to Mad River administrative staff I have found they are very good at defending their Docs while disavowing responsibility. When I said I did not feel my insurance company should have to pay for 2 er visits, and 2 ambulance rides and 2 er physicians the gal said "well you do what you think you must do, we stand by our physicians and their decisions, and they operate independently from the hospital." Their damage control/PR staff are very good at twisting ones words.

My expecting wife called ahead looking for an ultra sound quote. She explained we didnt have insurance and that we would pay cash at the time of the visit.. They told her they would give her a discount if paying cash which would make the TOTAL cost $207.20. So she decided to make the appointment and paid for the visit before she had the ultra sound.. Skip to two weeks ahead and we now have a bill for $181 to be paid to Redwood Radiology Inc.. What happened here??? Double billed? So when she calls them to straighten it out they tell her that the $207.20 was just a "facility fee".. Ridiculous and dishonest!!! How the heck does the facility fee cost more than the actual service?? Redwood Radiology was willing to discount the $181 down to $126.70 But Mad River so far wont budge. If she had known this she would NOT have made the appointment to begin with. Also the nurse who gave the ultra sound was cold and unpleasant.. We will never go there again for any reason.
