Thursday, February 23rd my husband was sent to Eisenhower ER from the Eisenhower on Washington & MIles as they thought he might have something wrong with his Gallbladder. He checked in at the desk to be seen by a doctor and told to go sit down. He texted me and said he was there so I left work and went to the ER. Upon arrival I was told he had left. I said, "He would not do that". Then they took me to a booth to talk to someone else who looked on the computer and said, He left. Again I said he would not leave. I texted him and he was having a Cat scan. When he came out we went and sat for a long time until they called him for blood work. Again we saw no one. After 5 1/2 hours we told them we were leaving and they had us sign a consent to leaving. It doesnt end there. Friday they called him and said, "We dont like your blood work come back". He went back into the ER and they ended up admitting him for an infection, possible in his Gallbladder. A really long story short a week today he is still in the hospital and I have only met one of the Doctors. He had some complications trying to clear up the infection. Not once did anyone call me, his wife to explain anything. Last Saturday they tried to do a procedure on him and he had an irregular heart beat so they stopped. They were able to regulate his heart by the next day. We waited around for another two days before they were able to get the stones removed from his bile duct. Again no one kept us in the loop and I have never met the doctor who did the procedure or ever been given his name. After cleaned out the stones out of his bile duct he now needed his gallbladder removed which took another two days to get that done. After the Gallbladder was removed the other doctor came out and told me he thought he could see some more stones in the bile duct. Now it has been two more days and we are waiting for them to fit him in to have a stent put in his bile duct so if there are stones they will be able to go out into the duodenum. This all could have been done at the same time if the right hand knew what the left hand was doing. He is waiting to be taken in for the procedure but there are 12 people in the room waiting too. This could have been taken care of in most hospital in a few days not over a week. This could have been done in three days if they had talked to each other. If you are thinking of going to a hospital for an emergency this is not the one you want to go to.

My mother was admitted for an emergent major surgical procedure a few weeks ago, and was an inpatient at Eisenhower Medical Center for one week. For the first 24 hours after surgery she was in ICU and received standard care. During her stay she acquired a bed sore that was never addressed or treated; and is now dealing with the pain and complications from this. Her surgeon noted and acknowledged that she had high blood pressure, but did NOT bother to get an internal medicine consult or try to figure out the underlying cause of her hypertension before discharging her to home stating "It is not my specialty." The underlying cause of her hypertension was congestive heart failure (CHF). She gained 28.5 lbs (28.5% of her body weight) during her one week stay, and had 3+ pitting edema in her lower extremities at discharge from the hospital (part of the reason she developed a bed sore). She was also discharged home with critically low potassium levels which is LIFE THREATENING!!! Why were her lab values NOT addressed? (She lives approx. 1 hr from a hospital; another reason not to discharge prematurely.) I have always believed the STANDARD OF CARE for hospitals is a head to toe assessment by an RN each shift (every 12 hrs) AND additionally a physician assessment every 24 hours. If this were the case,if proper nursing and physician care had been provided, these life-threatening conditions would have 1) been noticed, and 2) been addressed and treated before discharge from the hospital. Additionally she did not receive a bed bath or asked if she needed one during her stay. I was told by her, that the nurses were too busy and did not have time. At this point she was afraid to ask for too much for fear of her future needs not being met. I know nursing assessments are required each shift, apparently they were NOT completed or they would have noted the changes in her condition. Another concern: ARE RECORDS/CHARTING BEING FALSIFIED RELATED TO NOT HAVING TIME TO DO STANDARDIZED NURSING/MD ASSESSMENTS? How many additional elderly individuals will be discharged home from this hospital with life-threatening medical conditions not addressed?

Had a minimally invasive surgery outside of Eisenhower Medical Center that went very wrong. The "wrong" part was the way my body reacted to the procedure, not my doctor whos excellent at what he does. Ended up at Eisenhower Medical Center with a ballooned neck and high fever. Doctors and nurses in ER were for the most part kind, friendly and fast (some of the check in assts. at ER need an attitude adjustment. Ive heard robo computers that were friendlier), but all ER staff was attentive, friendly and moved very quickly. The ER is new and beautiful. Everything is state of the art technology and super clean. Ive never seen blood test, MRI, etc, come back so quickly. When I asked the nurse she told me they have their own lab that they do not share with the hospital. Great concept. Had to stay at the hospital for two nights, I had my own room and the team of nurses and doctors were great! Things happened on time, changes happened quickly and the medical team moved in sync. It didnt matter if I asked for ice water or pain medication, things were delivered fast and without an attitude (so important.) Ive been in several hospitals over the years that treat you like a piece of meat with eyeballs. Heres the amazing part of my hospital stay (drum roll) THE FOOD WAS VERY GOOD! I can believe I just said that about any hospital. I kept saying to myself, "okay, lunch was really good but dinner will probably suck." Nope, every meal was tasty. For me, it really helps when youre in pain to at least have a good meal. Makes a big difference...of course the pain management has to be spot on too and it was. I highly recommend Eisenhower hospital. A great hospital and you can tell they take pride in making your stay a positive experience.
