I had a wonderful experience with Lorien! My grandmother stayed at Lorien several times on and off from 2006-2009 for respite care and rehab. My grandma liked things just so and the staff went out of their way to accommodate her each and every time she stayed there. She enjoyed staying there so much that it was sometimes hard brining her back home. The staff was compassionate, helpful, kind and really got to know her even if her visits were sometimes short. The Unit Manager and Director of Nursing were very sympathetic to my grandmothers complicated condition and suggested several programs she could enroll in to help manage the large amount a medication she was on. They went out of their way to get her connected with a program at John’s Hopkins which greatly improved her quality of life when she returned home and reduced her medications by almost half. My grandmother had severe difficulties swallowing and due to her Parkinson’s this had become a daily struggle for us and for her. Had the Nursing team not gone above and beyond to help her like they did she would have suffered greatly through her last year. I cannot begin to say how grateful my family and I were for their help and compassion during such a difficult time. Because I had such a wonderful experience with Lorien and their staff, after my grandmother passed away I decided to apply for a position at their facility. I have now been working at Lorien for over 3 years and can truly say that the staff continues to be the best in the business!!!

A social worker referred us to this facility to help my grandmother get stronger after recovering from pneumonia and we were absolutely appalled at the condition of this rehab facility. We were not comfortable leaving her here and spent the next day going through the process to get her out. The room looked dingy and didnt feel clean. There was trash left under the nightstand. The drinking water they provided left a disgusting aftertaste. The beds are rickety and look like they are from 1970 and sound awful when raised/lowered. There were NO bed alarms or side rails to prevent her from trying to get out of bed on her own. On top of that the beds look incredibly uncomfortable. They only did 2 hours of rehab a day and then left her to lay in bed the rest of the day. Not only was it incredibly noisy, but the employees yelled down the hall to eachother and kept waking her up. Other than the therapists, the staff was not very friendly. Dont be fooled by the photos on their website. We thought it was a newer building, but all they did was paint the old brown brick, build a new portico, and renovate the reception area. Its a piece of crap and grandparents DESERVE BETTER!

Very very unpleasant, dissatisfying service. Night shift staffs are worse than you can imagine. They dont do their jobs right. I stay there for only 1~3 hours a day and even during that short amount of time, I encounter with so many issues. Its not like Im so picky. Its just basic stuff like leave oxygen open, change food, and suction. They cant even do these basic duties right. I do agree that SOME staffs are nice and knows what theyre doing, but MOST staffs are worst. When we tell them theres problem, they grins and seems irritated. No apologies, all you hear is "I dont know." They seems okay during daytime but you dont know until you check back how your family is being treated at night time. When you are touring this place you should seriously consider spending time talking to the patients family if you can before you make decision because I regret admitting my family in this place. Planning to transfer him to other facility if I can.

When you hear nursing home you think this is where Im sending Mom or Dad to die. This is totally not the case with this facility. I did read several reviews before I had my mom sent to Lorien from Ho Co hosp. and I have to admit I was concerned but once she was settled in I was amazed at the how well my mother did here. She had a heart attack and a fall so she received therapy while on the rehab unit. The staff was helpful, the food wasn’t too bad and she even made it to the dining room for some of the activities that were being held for the long term residents. The nursing staff that took care of my mother were all great and she is a handful! My mother has since come home and is doing well thanks to the help of Lorien during her recovery. I hope this is as helpful as some of the lessor reviews that are posted to Google - they really don’t do this place justice.

Deplorable. My mom came here after 5 weeks in the hospital. In one week, we dealt with the SMELL of this place (urine), incompetent staff who didnt react when alarms went off in the rooms, and uncaring staff who yelled at my mom in the middle of the night when her pillow fell on the floor. Really? The owner should start paying attention. When we moved my Mom to Lorien Mt. Airy, it was a totally different experience.

Had a relative in this place recently and I have nothing but good things to say about this facility. Everyone was just super, I would go there in a heartbeat if I had to..... God bless all the beautiful employees who help to make those lives special who cant help themselves, I was quite impressed with this place, considering Ive seen a couple other places that were horrible......

Lorien of Columbia is a wonderful skilled nursing facility. We work with many families who have received care at Lorien and they have given us great feedback. The staff is knowledgeable, skilled and friendly. Their convienent location has skilled nursing & rehab, onsite dialysis, assisted living and doctors offices.
