I recommend that no-one take your dog to this establishment. I have brought my dog in three times in the past 8 days. The vet techs are incompetent and ignorant to put it nicely. That I understand is a direct shot at ones lively hood and professionalism but I will provide exact examples of how their ignorance nearly killed my dog. Each time upon dropping him off for the entire day including one extended stay from 730am-300pm (roughly 30 hours) the following day. After the third time of dropping him off for the entire day I was forced to take him to the 24 hour referral clinic off 162 in Copley. The Dr at the ER asked me if dr.hicks had given him an iv or anything to lower his fever, they did not. His fever was near 104.8 upon dropping him off at the ER. Mind you Tyson had been at Akron-Medina Veterinary since 745 am that morning, it was now 400 pm (same day). So while my dog was "under the care" of Dr.Hicks and his incompetent techs they never once gave a dehydrated dog who has lost 20 pounds in 8 days an IV, or anything to break his fever. I have been there three times in the past week and only meant with Dr.Hicks one time face to face and that was on the initial overnight drop off. That was truly annoying and mad me extremely angry and upset. Its almost as if he feels that he is to intelligent and snobby to spend time with you and answer your concerns and questions. When I went to the ER they had to run all the same blood work and x-rays that Dr.Hicks had done over the past week. The ER Dr. told me that she needed to because they do not trust him blood work machine and the x-rays were bellow standard and nearly impossibly for a radiologist to use accurately. So the 800 dollars spent at Akron-Medina Veterinary Hospital was completely pointless because Dr.Hicks own peers do not respect nor trust his judgement nor his work. If your own peers who you refer customers to dont trust you then why should a normal non-professionally trained person trust you?? The third time I dropped Tyson off I asked the vet tech Eric to please check his throat, when I picked him up I asked Eric if he checked his throat and his response was "um I dont know Dr. Hicks didnt say anything about that". I dont understand why they wouldnt do this simple thing that I asked of them. I understand that being a Vet is a hard practice, but there is a lack of professionalism and ignorance and runs rampant through Akron-Medina Veterinary Hospital. The one and only positive thing that I can say about them is the ladies who answer the phone are truly nice and a pleasure to deal with. I will go out of my way to tell my story to anyone who will listen. I will plead, beg and educate everyone I come in contact with who owns a dog about my story and my experiences with Dr.Hicks and his staff and I will insist that they do not take their dog there and ask them to tell their friends and warn them about the ignorance at Akron-Medina Veterinary Hospital.

For the past month and a half our cat Simba had been obviously ill and we had taken him to see Dr. Hicks 3 times. He stopped eating, he was throwing up and having diarrhea, he had rapid weight loss and was lethargic. No one there seemed to understand the severity of the situation or even seemed concerned. Despite his worsening condition Dr. Hicks continued to insist that he was “a healthy looking cat”. I could feel his bones and I could see it in his eyes that this was not the case. Everyone who saw him said that he looked sick and after three visits to we finally decided to seek a second opinion. The first thing the new vet said was that he could tell that this cat had been very sick for a long time. In one visit, lasting roughly an hour, after running some blood work (which I thought had already been done by Dr. Hicks) the doctor found that Simba had Diabetes, FIV, a failing liver and a failing pancreas. He did a fantastic job of explaining to us exactly what tests were done, what was wrong with Simba and what courses of action were available to us. Unfortunately, the abundance of illnesses that had gone untreated/diagnosed were too far advanced to do anything that could improve his quality of life and we were forced to put him down. There may not have been anything that we could have done to prevent this, but we may not have had to put him through the pain and the torture of forcing medication down his throat. Maybe we could have saved him a month and a half of pain and suffering or made him more comfortable somehow if we had known what was wrong with him. I cannot fathom how a so called experienced veterinarian could miss all of these issues, it is inexcusable and disgusting. I would not recommend that anyone use Akron-Medina Veterinary Hospital!!!

I am not sure how this place gets good ratings. Perhaps because the pet owners that go here have no hygiene requirements of a company. The exterior of the building is beautiful however the interior is awful! Vet - Typical Doctors office from exterior. Wait was a little long. Office interior was discussing and very outdated to match the exterior façade. Dirty with hair in corners of room suggesting poor cleaning habits from the staff. Wood paneling=ugly (like being inside a trailer from the 70s) The staff will try to upsell you on EVERYTHING! Office staff tried to over charge for items not received. Double check your bill! Also gave a one yr rabies tag with a three yr was administered. Unsure of the qualifications of "Dr Hicks"... Boarding - At pick up had to wait for the vet tech to come to the boarding side because they arent properly staffed. Horrendous odors. Poor upkeep. Do not go into the boarding areas as you will not want your animal to be subjected to this disaster. Looking in the cages animals had poo all over suggesting the "three walks per day" probably arent sufficient. All the dogs were barking and whining probably from being left in this place! BAD BAD BAD! They must get better ventilation and offer a day camp option where the dogs can run around all day instead of being cooped up during their stay. Only plus is that when staying more than two nights they give a free bath and nail trim. Overall this place is terrible. Stay away until this place gets new management that actually cares for the animals and pet owners.

Dr. Hicks and his staff saved my cat, Jules. A couple weeks ago, my four year old cat starting acting lethargic and went downhill overnight. My regular vet did not open until late morning, so I chose Akron Medina Veterinary hospital because they opened several hours earlier than other area vets, and I wanted to get my cat in as quickly as possible before he got any worse. I also start work early, so this is another reason the early morning hours were a lifesaver: I was able to drop my kitty off and head to work (as much as I wanted to stay with him, I didnt have the option to do that on a work day). The secretary was wonderful, and Dr. Hicks spoke to me via phone several times throughout the day to update me on my kitty. It turned out to be a serious case of pneumonia and would have been fatal if he did not receive medical attention quickly. Dr. Hicks was great about explaining my options and customizing a care plan that was affordable for me. He was very upfront and thorough about explaining all of my options AND the related costs. I was able to pick up my cat that evening and he began improving right away with the antibiotics and medication he was given. He is now back to 100% health. Needless to say, I will be transferring all of my pets to Akron Medina Veterinary hospital.
