We took our 2 month old son here for his well child visit with Dr. Mason. We arrived 20 minutes early to fill out new patient paperwork and get checked in. The front desk lady was nice enough as she handed me all the necessary forms to fill out. After filling out our paperwork, we handed it back to her and sat down to wait. We waited, and waited, and waited some more. Finally I decided to get up and ask how far behind Dr. Mason was running (this was 15 minutes AFTER our appointment time). The woman who checked us in was on the phone, so I asked the other lady working the front desk. She told us that we hadnt checked in! I told her that I did in fact fill out the paperwork and return it, and she told me that the employee must have just forgotten to check us in. Now we were the ONLY people in the waiting room at this time. Youd think that they might say something to us after seeing us just sitting there for 35 minutes with a 2 month old? So then we get taken back to our room. The medical assistant was fine. We got our son weighed and measured, then waited for the doctor. This is where things got ridiculous. Dr. Mason came in and introduced herself. She looked at and spoke directly to us, and rarely even looked at our son. One of the first things that came up, before any type of exam on our son, was vaccinations. Now, we are not anti vaccinations. We are pro vaccine, but we have concerns with the amount given at the same time, so early on. Before having our son, I did an incredible amount of research on vaccines, ingredients, scientific studies, the diseases they prevent, side effects, etc. Based on my research, we have decided to vaccinate our son, but on a less aggressive schedule. Before we could really explain anything, Dr. Mason became extremely confrontational. She glanced at the proposed schedule that I had typed out (and put so much of my time and energy into), exclaimed, "oh, Im not doing this!" and set (or rather, threw) it aside. She then went on to tell us horror stories of babies getting diseases for a good 10 minutes straight. All the while, our son is just sitting there... shes barely even acknowledged him. Then she abruptly stood up and walked out saying, "let me go get our vaccine policy," as she was already halfway through the door. When we mentioned Dr. Sears delayed schedule, she informed us that she did her residency with Dr. Sears and that he was basically crazy. I need to be clear that Im not upset that this doctor is very pro vaccination per the CDCs schedule. That is perfectly fine and if this was our only problem with her, I wouldnt be writing this review. The reason I am trying to warn others about her is due to the way we were treated. She was extremely condescending, confrontational, unprofessional, and inattentive. Regardless of how you feel about vaccinations, doctors have a responsibility to treat their customers (yes, patients are their customers and they work for US) with respect. There was an entirely different way that she could have gone about this conversation, and she took the most insane, inappropriate, unprofessional route that she possibly could have. I also must add that the exam that she did do on our son felt very incomplete... and if there would have been a health issue with him, I doubt that she would have caught it because she was so fired out about vaccinations the entire visit. Dr. Calcgano, who owns this practice... has been under review with the medical board numerous times. There has been talk of revoking his medical license on more than one occasion. Around the time that we brought our son in (a couple months ago), we received an email announcing that he would be retiring from practicing medicine and I cant help but think that this has more to do with yet another recent case against him. I hate to "badmouth" anyone, and this is not my intention with this review. I just hope that this might help another parent make an informed decision about who they choose to be their childs pediatrician.
