Short Version: Medical care was great for me, administrative and billing side of the hospital are somewhere on a scale between inept and shady. If you can choose your care (non emergency) go somewhere else. Long Version: Had a planned surgery back in December. I will first say that the actual medical staff (doctors and nurses) were very helpful, kind, and did a good job. I see some reviews that argue against this, but the day surgery crew was awesome! I had never dealt with surgery before though, so I am learning a few things regarding the "business side" of medicine. Apparently, its good practice for hospitals to call you ahead of time for procedures such as this and let you know the costs up front. I received no such call from Baylor McKinney. I walked in the day of my surgery and the lady at the admissions desk sheepishly told us "Whoops, someone should have done that. Oh well you have to pay now". Ok great, we knew it would be expensive, so we were prepared and paid my entire deductible on the spot. Asked her about additional costs, was told, by looking at my insurance, we should be covered the rest of the way (which surprised me, knowing how our insurance works, I knew I would still have a copay window until my OOP Max) Cut forward a few months, and like many horror stories you hear about these days, I receive a ridiculously high bill. My insurance decided to just accept many charges, and paid the hospital a large chunk of change. Thank goodness for that, but the hospital came calling for more, magically giving me a number that lines up with my OOP Max with my carrier (just a little under). I have had to pay more out of pocket and through my insurance for a non-invasive day surgery than we did for my wifes labor, delivery, and 3 night stay at another hospital. When I called to complain about the prices, I got one inept lady who basically just read me my bill. On the second try I was basically told what equated to "Sorry, thats just what we charge. We can set up a payment plan if youd like." My insurance company says I should have negotiated some of the prices down before the procedure. That one missing "whoops" phone call has caused lots of trouble now, and Im cynical enough to believe it wasnt a "whoops" anymore. Final Verdict: If you are in an emergency situation, you have no choice, just be prepared to give them a chunk of change. If you are going for planned procedures, pick a different area hospital. And learn from my mistake, demand they give you all the estimated costs upfront so that you can negotiate from a place of power. Medicine is a business unfortunately, and when the hospital doesnt have power, they will try to keep their customer.

Patient care is the worst i have witnessed in the DFW area. Really. The building and facilities are nice but there seems to be a lack of competence among the medical staff in this hospital that was, at least in our case, at third world hospital levels. And we know this because we actually do have experience with third world hospitals. Those hospitals have no choice about their inefficiencies... Baylor does. Our ER patient was admitted and scheduled for tests that would not materialize for days. In the meantime he was shuffled from doctor to doctor to doctor with no co-ordination between them ( meaning, doctor A has no idea what doctor B was doing or why and doctor C cant answer your question. dont people read medical charts anymore? Is that an old practice?) Numerous duplicate tests were ordered, again, because A isnt communicating with B....NONE of the results were communicated. The doctors keep those to themselves unless you ask.... the right doctor. The patient was in hospital for four days, the doctors collectively spent maybe a combined hour with him. Visits were lacking in information and very, very swift. In the meantime he was on a liquid only diet waiting for a test.....FOR DAYS. Upon discharge four days later ( for what should have taken, at most 2.5 days... i know people that have spent less time in hospital after SURGERIES) there has been ZERO follow up with him from the hospital or their doctors.... this is a patient waiting on some anxiety inducing test results. The doctor musical chairs resumed at discharge. Follow up with doctor C, oh no shes out of town for so many weeks and only works on these days, call the hospital for your results, no call doctor A, he was the admitting physician, no actually physically come in to the hospital so you can sign release forms to get YOUR OWN medical information since it seems the doctors are in no hurry to communicate it....to you, or your PCP, or each other. Just utterly ridiculous. There have got to be better hospitals on Mckinney otherwise i feel sorry for the people that live around there. In our case, unless its a life or death matter ( in which case lets all pray....hard), i advised my family member, in the future, to high tail it to Plano Presbyterian because the incompetence we saw at Baylor Mckinney is not something you see often there. Btw...we are still playing physician musical chairs trying to get short term disability paperwork signed thanks to delays THEY created....Just ridiculous.

I hate to write a negative review and very rarely do so, but we had such a horrible experience with Baylor in McKinney. We live within a mile of this hospital and will NEVER visit their ER again. The first time we went, my husband who just had surgery (at UT Southwestern) to remove his prostate due to cancer, had severe pain and they refused to give him medication and treated him like he was a drug addict seeking a fix. It was July 4th weekend and the doctor told us to "have a great holiday weekend and that nothing was wrong and he should be fine". Of course we received a $2200 bill a few weeks later. The next time we went was due to the fact my husband had unexplained massive bleeding.. We decided we had no choice but to go due to location and it being during rush hour traffic. The nurses were helpful and nice, but the doctor walked in an hour later, looked at him and said she was calling Care Flite to take him to UT Southwestern where his surgeon was without touching him. What started at 5pm ended with him finally being treated with care at UT Southwestern after 11pm. I finally got over being so mad after paying $700 (our part) of a $5500 bill for that visit and $400 (our portion) to Care Flite but then I received a $1600 bill for the ER doctor alone "level 5 care".. I was floored since nothing was done. I sent a very nice letter detailing what happened and completely assumed they would write off the charges. In the meantime our insurance paid her $1160 for basically turning us away. She did call my husbands surgeon so I need to give her credit for that but never physically touched him or went thru testing with the exception of a few basic questions. 4 months had passed so I just had assumed everything was written off but then I received a response last week that nothing can be done and we are responsible for the total bill and nothing can be taken off bill because he was there hours...that was NOT our choice of course! I immediately paid the bill in full because the letter stated it would go to collections otherwise. I just want to erase the whole thing from my memory. After telling my story, I have heard so many similar situations. My husbands surgeon who used robotic equipment and performed a major 5 hour surgery received less money than Baylor ER for just passing the buck. Also, UT southwesterns ER includes their doctor charge within the ER facility bill and it is only $250. Just a horrible situation from start to finish.
