I visited Neuro-Vision for evaluation and treatment of esotropia as recommended by my OD. Ill start with the positive: * They provide very good customer service; * Dr. Shidlofsky and his staff are friendly as you could ask for; * Its a nice office with a lot of modern equipment; and, * Has great facilities for kids; it looks like they would have a lot of fun getting treatment there. Unfortunately, due to a variety of factors, I did not get the treatment I was looking for and did not feel good about my experience overall. 1) INSURANCE: Although the doctor is in-network with BCBS, their vision therapy is a separate entity for billing purposes. I did not realize this in advance, so even though BCBS Minnesota covers these services, their being out-of-network made treatment cost-prohibitive. This was not made clear to me when I first contacted them, and if it had been, I would have saved myself the 3 trips to Plano and 8 hours of my life. I guess I just didnt know the right questions to ask, or realize that the doctor wasnt the one providing the services. But its going to be inherently difficult on patients when different people well be treated by in the same office dont participate in the same networks; these are misunderstandings just waiting to happen. 2) LOGISTICS/HOURS: Neuro-Vision had me come in 3 separate times for all sorts of fancy testing, which netted the same diagnosis that I got from my OD with a spoon. The doctor only provides certain services on certain days/times, so I had to wait 2-3 weeks between appointments, even when I had to come back another time because one of their machines wasnt working. This took ~8 hours including drive time over the course of a month, and I never received any sort of treatment whatsoever other than a huge variety of tests for my insurance to pay for. (They also wanted $50 for another one that insurance says is not a legitimate medical test and would not cover.) 3) TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY: Neuro-Vision was insistent that vision therapy was the best course of treatment; it felt like they were more interested in selling me on this service than in solving my problem. I asked about surgery and prism correction and they wrote these off, even though 2 other doctors who evaluated me raised those as great possibilities. Other doctors also pointed out that due to the extent of my esotropia and amount of correction needed, getting me to maintain binocular vision on my own even with vision therapy is a stretch (and certainly not worth the large financial gamble I was asked to take.) 4) SIGNIFICANT UP-FRONT COSTS AND COMMITMENT: Neuro-Vision rqeuires a long-term contract for vision therapy, much like my cable and cell phone companies, and worked hard to get me to sign up for a 12-course treatment with an up-front cost of $3,100. There is no option to try it first or to change my mind after a couple months if it turned out not to be the right treatment for me. I understand their reasoning for this, but it completely neglects the very true fact that vision therapy is simply not right for everyone. This approach seems like the complete opposite of the patient-centered care that so many providers are striving for today. Not content to shell out $3,100 and sign an eye care contract, I talked to several other ODs about options and was very glad I did. Several knew of Neuro-Vision and commented that they end up seeing many of Neuro-Visions patients for exactly these reasons. From my research into and conversations with all of the ODs I could find who treat esotropia in the DFW area, two really stood out: Dr. Brecheen at Brecheen Learning And Vision Center in Lewisville and Dr. Surdacki at First Eye Care in Carrolton. They are significantly less expensive, very knowledgable, and can offer some at-home vision therapy to minimize expenses and office visits. Eye care needs vary widely, so you may have a better experience at Neuro-Vision than I did. But I highly recommend doing your homework, shopping around, and getting a 2nd (and even 3rd!) opinion if its anything serious or expensive.

Dr Berry has been wonderful with our daughter, who has decreased vision after a brain injury. She prescribed glasses that other doctors hadnt thought of and our daughter has done so well with them. I think our experience with this clinic has done much for her. The staff is always friendly, we never wait for long and the clinic is very comfortable.

They took a long time with my 8 year old and described what he was going through. Now we just need to see if the next set of tests will lead to a course of action that will help. Its expensive. Stay tuned!
