Good, small HCA hospital. It is small compared to most hospitals, but the Doctors and staff are decent. The level of compassion and staff attitude has improved over the past 3 years...not that they were bad before...but I was an in-patient there about 3 and a half years ago and had a lot of complaints about the staff. Now, after being an in-patient during Christmas 2015, I could feel and see a positive change in ALL of the staff so I know policy has been updated in THAT area. They were respectful, gentle, patient, attentive. ER staff quickly put me in a private ER room with a door (not a curtain). I was lucid and could talk to them and ask/answer questions. I know some about both healthcare and business administration due to my education and work experience. The ER staff were "on point" and started tests/treatments immediately. Everyone was friendly and helpful. After being in the ER for a short time, the Doctor made the decision to admit me for observation/further tests. I didnt want to be admitted as I generally do not like hospitals & felt better, but the Doctor explained that I COULD leave but it would be against her medical advice (AMA) and when that happens, your insurance wont cover you at all. Good to know. Once in my room, nurses got me set with the monitor and IV..etc. I like the fact that most, if not all the rooms are private. They have excellent WIFI so you can get on-line which is great. I would have been bored to tears without that. I ended up having my tablet with me, so I was able to stream movies to keep occupied. The nurses were great. They also knew how to give shots that dont hurt!! I was checked on frequently and never had to call for a nurse so I cant speak on the response time. Annoying: They never really figured out what was wrong with me! I feel they should have been more pro-active since it has to do with my heart. I was given tests but not the results. They just said they couldnt find anything wrong. I know there is something wrong as the EMTs saw it on their monitor on the way to hospital. My heart was not beating right. I am to do a follow up appointment but with my primary care. I was given a Stress Test and Imaging Tests in Hospital and cant believe nothing was seen as SOMETHING is causing my heart to get "off beat" every now and then and it is not stress. Another issue was that I was told I would have a test in the morning (admitted the night before) and I couldnt have anything to eat until after my test,"first thing" the next morning. Well, when I woke up the next morning I was brought a breakfast tray. I told the girl (either RN or Aide) that I was not supposed to eat anything. She said "yeah, you can, I didnt see anything in your orders" in a way that suggested that I didnt know what I was talking about. Then another nurse came in, freaked and said "what are you doing with that tray, your not supposed to eat anything!" which I hadnt-- Duh! So, clearly there was a problem with communication during shift change or someone didnt read my chart--who knows. Also, I had been told that Id be able to go home soon after the test if everything looked OK (this was Christmas Eve). Had the test around noon. Waited all day and was told nothing. So, I had to stay another night. Finally, I was released around 11 a.m. on Christmas Day after one of the four Doctors I had seen said there was nothing wrong with me?? Great with bedside manner, respect, friendliness. Need to work on communication..especially during shift change. Docs and Nurses need to work on diagnosis/explanation/looking for real cause of problem--not just "oh sorry, we dont know". Advice for patients: Speak up for yourself if you are not getting what you need/want. If/when this heart thing happens to me again, I am going to a different hospital as I know stress and this isnt stress. Also, found out that I was labeled as an "Outpatient under observation" what kind of new crap is this? I am sure it will allow insurance companies to charge us more.

A TRUE HORROR STORY!!!! I took my mother to the JR ER w/what I thought was a stomach virus. (it was going around)! Due to her age, I feel she was ignored when it came to proper ER care! Another patient was brought in so the nurse (one) & doctor ran out to work on new arrival leaving a young male nurse who was trying his best, under the very difficult circumstances, to help her. My mother was quite combative - she was affraid. But no one there but me to try & help her. I really feel that they didnt know what to do so they just abandoned her. I had no idea she was as sick as she was. They could have done ALOT more for her but while they were gone (for quite awhile) ----- SHE PASSED AWAY!!!! Needless to say, I was in total shock. That was totally not expected. They closed the curtain leaving me alone w/my mother looking like something from a horror movie (eyes & mouth wide open)! They left her like that. I kissed her on the forehead & told her I loved her. I stepped out to see what I do next & the nurse (with no emotion) walked me to the exit. I was alone. My son lives out-of-state & nobody left in Hopewell to help me. I was in total shock & wondering "what the heck just happened?" It hadnt registered in my mind that my mother had just suddenly & unexpectedly died. "MY MOTHER ALWAYS SAID" - "DONT GO TO JOHN RANDOLPH" "YOU GO IN HEAD FIRST AND COME OUT FEET FIRST". You can imagine the guilt Im living with. Always listen to your mother. I didnt think it was THAT serious! I miss you mother - I am so sorry!

I went to JRMC ON 05/15/15. I have acute pancreantitis, which when I have a flare up, is extremely painful. Beyond anything that I could put into words. Well, they gave me something for the pain while they ran my blood work. They did an M.R.I (with dye) and once they came back into my room, I was told that they didnt see anything on the M.R.I. However, my white blood cell count was high. For anyone with a brain, knows when they are high thats a sign of infection somewhere in your body. They gave me something for my nausea and sent me home. To the best of my knowledge, when a test comes back telling the doctors that yes something "IS" wrong, they are supposed to take any and all tests to find out the problem. "THEY DID NOT DO SO" Now here I sit, Wednesday morning 05/20/15, in the very same pain that started about 1am. today. Where in the he&& are the doctors that care about people and their well-being. This is not the first time that I have been treated the very same way by this (so called hospital). Why do I keep going back? Because they are one block away from me. I just want answers for my pain and treatment, if necessary. I wish someone had an answer for me.They are the worst. Maybe you have to be on your death bed before they will provide serious help. A DAMN SHAME!!!!!!!
