I have taken my dog here since I got him as a puppy in 2003. I used to see Dr. Scarlet. She was the only one I trusted there. She was really on the level with me and was very kind. I dont know if she works there anymore but I havent gotten to see her in years. A few months ago I took my guy in for swollen lymph nodes. The reception desk did not seem to think this was an emergency. I got the "earliest" appointment I could which was about a week later. The doctor I saw was Dr. Jones and I think she needs to really work on her bedside manner. She was awful, seemed inexperienced and honestly made me more upset than need be and that was even before shed taken a blood sample for testing! Her diagnosis was correct. My little guy has lymphoma but there was no way I was taking him there for treatment. One of the other doctors or techs called me to verify my dogs test results a few days later and tried to convince me to use them for my dogs chemotherapy by saying it would be cheaper with them. He quoted me some costs but by that time I was pretty sure I would not be going back. I also asked if they had an Oncologist on staff, which frankly if the dog has cancer I think is pretty effing important, they said no, but that they worked with a couple. That was the nail in the coffin for me...so to speak. I couldnt let my dog at the hands of people who werent specially trained to deal with cancer, not if I wanted to keep him happy and comfortable for as long as possible. I took him to the best place I could find - SF Vet Specialists. I went in thinking it would be more expensive there but it isnt AND they are totally cool if you just want to go get the pills at Costco or wherever. They dont make you buy the meds from them which was my experience previously with Mission Pet. Not to mention the place is so small and kind of run-down looking. It makes a big difference when youre spending a lot of time in the waiting room if the waiting room is a. not crowded and b. so clean you could eat off the floors. A previous problem I had there involved a little tumor on my dogs toe. Hed gotten one as a pup and it eventually went away by itself. The second time he got it it took a little while longer for it to go away so I took him in. They told me it wasnt cancer which was good, but the Dr., whose name I cant recall, was like "if it doesnt go away in a month you should bring him in and well remove it." I didnt bring him in after a month. A couple months later the thing went away by itself like I had expected. They just wanted me to come in and spend a ton of money to get a growth removed from his toe that was not hurting him or bothering him - just because they wanted my money. Btw...when I asked how much that might cost the Dr. said "Lets just worry about that when we cross that bridge." What a jerk.

I have every confidence in Dr Gordon. I work with special needs dogs and have multiple visits each year for several years. Seen a few other Vets there and they have all been nice so far. Like everything these days, they are expensive, but Dr Gordon does not treat or dispense unnecessarily as far as my pets are concerned. Like any other professional, they only see a snapshot of your animal friend. So one must take responsibility for their own companions, observe carefully, give details and ask the hard questions. Google stuff you are not sure about and help them help your companion animal. The front desk staff are always nice in person, though busy. Negative points are the wait time (be aware: if emergencies come in, you wait). Also, the busy signals and long times on hold when calling in. Oh! they do not often call you with followup, so you must call and leave a message for the vet to call you with results of tests or to report your animals status. Thus they are short one star.

Ive been taking my pets to Mission Pet hospital for more than 15 years and I have to say that they have always been very concerned about my pets whenever they were sick, they were quick to tell me when my pets didnt need medication or additional procedures done. Also, when my two pets died, within 4 months of each other (my 22 year old cat and my 13 1/2 year old dog) they were so kind, gentle and considerate of my cat my dog and of me. I even received sympathy cards after each had passed. The waiting room is small, the area has parking issues, but I have to say that the veterinary care my dear pets have received has been great. I always felt comfortable bringing my my babies there and when necessary leaving them there for care. I now have a new puppy and plan on taking him to Mission Pet as well (I highly recommend Dr. Gordon or Dr. Press-BTW "disillusioned" Dr. Scarlet left to head up SF SPCA about a year or two ago.

This is only going off of one experience, but when my dog had blood in her stool, I brought her here. I appreciated that they didnt pressure me into doing expensive tests and procedures without first trying the obvious. They prescribed a one week course of Flagyl (an antibiotic) to see if that cleared things up and if that didnt work they said I could come back in to drop off a stool sample (without having to pay for another doctors appointment) and that they would go from there. Luckily the Flagyl was all she needed and I didnt end up doing other tests. But I appreciated the difference from other vets Ive been to where they want to run every possible test and perform extra procedures just to charge you more money.

This place is horrifying. They have misdiagnosed illnesses in one of my dogs twice. The first time I figured, okay, doctors make mistakes. The second time, twice they misdiagnosed my dogs illness. When I brought my dog in because he had collapsed, they diagnosed him with a pulmonary thrombo embolism, which is a death sentence in humans and dogs, which I didnt know at the time. I asked what the prognosis was and was told my dog could be treated. After more than 36 hours at the hospital, the vet told me I could come see my dog. It was obvious to me the dog was not going to heal. I feel these vets are only interested in milking pet owners of their money and really feel no compassion for animals.

Update 2017: ended up bringing our dog back, but asked for a different doctor with more experience this time. Got Dr. Press, cant recommend him highly enough! Very patient and talked us through all the possible problems, tests, outcomes, and costs associated. Laid everything on the table just like we wanted so we could make an informed decision. We are definitely fans now! Yay MPH! Original 2016: These people are nice, and their prices are OK for San Francisco, but we brought our dog in for an issue and even though we paid for several tests they never did diagnose it. So I sort of doubt their abilities.
