I have to take a minute to rave about my experience with Dr. Carothers and the staff at the VCA Newark Animal Hospital! Last weekend, I made an unexpected trip to VCA after my English Springer Spaniel, Oshie, was attacked by a Pit Bull. I was out of town and had a hard time finding an emergency vet available to treat him, but thankfully VCA was able to see him. When I arrived, one of the technicians gently took Oshie from my arms and immediately took him back to be evaluated by Dr. Carothers. When she was done assessing him, she met me in one of the exam rooms. Luckily his injury wasn’t life threatening, but he did need surgery to stitch up a chunk of skin that was taken out of his shoulder. Dr. Carothers was professional yet personable as she updated me on his condition and the procedure he was about to undergo. I felt at ease with him in her hands! Before they took him back for surgery, one of the staff members brought him out so I could visit with him. Despite being attacked by a dog twice his size, he emerged from the back tail wagging as the staff member handled him with care and love. I felt terrible that he threw up on the floor as I was visiting with him, but the tech was so sweet and reassured me that it was fine. They took him back when the sedative they gave him was clearly starting to set in. As soon as his surgery was over, Dr. Carothers met with me to tell me that everything went well and to explain Oshie’s post-surgery care. I could see she genuinely cared about Oshie by the way she talked about how sweet he is and what a good boy he had been. Almost as if he was her own! Since our visit, the staff have followed up via phone to check on him and answer any questions or concerns I had. Dr. Carothers and all of the staff members also sent him a get well card! The staff at VCA Newark Animal Hospital went above and beyond for Oshie and for that I am very grateful! In addition to the excellent quality of care, the VCA facility is truly amazing. It is easy to access, it is very spacious and it is clean! You won’t be disappointed taking your four legged family member here!

MY PUPPY, BEAR, DIED AFTER BEING TREATED HERE!!!!. I brought my puppy, Bear, here. Veterinarian Carolyn Remsberg had prescribed and administered, and caused to be administered, 23mg of Cerenia to Bear in one day. He died some 2 hours later. When I called to get her license number, or a way to find her license number, she was "unreachable." I used the information I had about her to find out why searching for "Remsberg" in the State vet database came up with a nursing license that expired in the 90s. Her license number DOES NOT come up under "Remsburg" in the Delaware State veterinarian database. It does come up searching "Gurnee-Remsburg" or "Gurnee." I also found Pfizers application for FDA approval of Cerenia: "The Freedom of Information Summary Original New Animal Drug Application NADA 141-263 “Cerenia” (Maropitant Citrate) Injectable Solution," which had some interesting information regarding the administration of Cerenia in dogs. Study #1460N-60-01-585 by Dr. Michael C. Savides concluded that Cerenia in dogs under 16 weeks causes bone marrow hypoplasia. The result of the study does not support the safe use of Cerenia in puppies 8 to 11 weeks of age. Other side effects of Cerenia overdose include diarrhea, seizure, shock, coma, and death. Imagine your "Bear" dying after being administered their "23mg!" Now imagine going to your doctor and being refused their license number! Other than the fact that the VCA is expensive, they employ incompetent veterinarians. Id like to think that Remsburg would not have given such a high dosage, nor prescribed the drug in the first place, to my 10 week old puppy had she read the drug label and listened to the manufacturer. My Bear was a part of the family. He was a member of the family. I know a lot of you feel the same way about your "Bear(s)." You wouldnt want any human member of your family seen by a doctor that does not read or know about the drugs they prescribe! Why would you do it with the animal members?

My old girl was brought in as an emergency for what was a diabetic seizure.. they threw everything at me at a time when I was especially emotional. The doctor who I later re-named as "Dr. Jukenstein" basically told me if I didnt consent to about 4k worth of treatment I "might as well euthanize her," and basically I sucked as a dog-Mom. Thank God I had my sister on the line and my bffs by my side to help me make a good decision. My bff and sister are nurses and what she basically needed an IV of glucose but they wanted to give her all sorts of invasive procedures.. I"m still paying that bill off... they suck, but especially Dr. Jukenstein, who wouldnt even look me in the eye when he spoke. Cleo lived over a year after that initial visit. I wouldnt take my goldfish there. It would probably cost about 3k anyway. The Emergency vets on Airport Road.. stellar, kind, realistic.

We brought our kitty in due to constipation. While the staff was very friendly and took their time to explain their diagnosis, there were several things we were disappointed in. We had asked that they remove a piece of matted fur from under her chin, which they did not do. Also, although she was constipated, her rear end was covered in feces when we took her, and her carrier smelled. We were told they would clean her, however she had two "balls" of feces hanging from her tail when we returned home. They also did not check the blanket in the carrier, which turned out to be soiled and should have been removed before putting our kitty back in. Still, we would not hesitate to take her there again, but would make extra sure to ask them, before leaving, if everything was done.

I am not sure what has happened in a matter of 3 months but, I took my very very sick puppy there in the middle of the night and they did wonders for her. I truly thought she was going to die and was sick over it. The doctor told me he would do what ever he could to save her and that it would cost $1,500.00. I really didnt have that money to spend on the puppy but there was no way I was going to let here die. With in 24 hours my puppy was as good as new. Everyone in the hospital was very kind and took very good care of my baby. They may be a bit expensive but I love the service and the way they treat my Taza. I will continue to have her treated there.

It surprises me to see these wonderful reviews, we had a terrible experience. They take you back immediately into a stuffy room with hardly any seating and you wait for hours with the door shut without any updates on your pet. Regardless the staff was very sweet, I feel like this location could use more staff members to meet the volume of patients. They are extremely over priced.. Luckily we opted out of treatment with them and took our business to Veterinary Specialty Center of Delaware 290 Churchmans Rd, New Castle, DE... where my dog stayed an extra day and HALF THE PRICE!!!!!!!!!!
