I visited the HUH ER on the night of Jan 8, 2017 complaining of shortness of breath and chest discomfort. I was terribly worried when I started to experience some pain doing very simple things such as breathing deeply, stretching my right arm, deep yawn, reaching to my back pocket for my wallet (using right arm), sitting down, and picking things off the floor. It also seems that the frigid cold had exacerbate matters. I was grateful that the Hospital was a short walking distance away so I walk for about 7min the ER and check myself in. I waited for a good 13min to register. Registration process along with taking vitals was about a 10min. No real issue. I was seen by a total of six members of healthcare staff who were all unquestionably very professional, performing various functions as required. Within a span of about 3 hours I had my vitals, blood drawn (from which I fainted since I don’t like needles), chest x-ray, and EKG. I was seen actively by two nurses and one PA. They each had their own personality which I summed up as; caring, informative and, no nonsense motherly love. I owe a debt of gratitude to them for the care and attention they had given me. I was discharged just before 4:00AM and by then I was 100% better, the pain I felt taking deep breath was gone, no more chest discomfort and literally all of the problems I had coming into the hospital were gone by the time I exited the hospital. I am truly grateful. I’ve read the negative reviews which are quite scary and should not be dismissed. I think much of the blame ought to go straight to administrators failing to put in place clear policies that centers on patient care and holding folks (admin included) who diverge from those policies to account. On the night of Jan 8, 2017 however, my experience at Howard University Hospital was very positive one and I again thank the team of professionals who tended to my care.

This hospital will make you sicker with their customer service. The medical staff is wonderful, but by the time you get to them, you are so annoyed with their unprofessional administrative staff that you will surely be diagnosed with high blood pressure to add on to your symptoms. And their appointment line is no better. I have expressed urgency and it still gets ignored. As a part of the community, you would think that they would really care about giving exceptional service however when you have a staff of people who are just collecting a paycheck, the community hospital atmosphere that they advertise is just not what they portray. I cannot rate the doctors as I am not a patient, my mom is. I am her caregiver and cannot get her to change medical facilities because this is all she knows. I have my own medical doctor and in comparison, Howard University Hospital is like going to a third world country seeking medical attention. I must say, there was one employee, non-medical, that had a sense of decency. But that is a small number after becoming my mother’s caregiver and dealing with them for over 3 years. I know that this hospital serves a large amount of people, but so do other area hospitals and I have seen far better service. Instead of all of their community outreach, they need to tend to their own home and get it in order. That one employee and medical staff would get 5 stars if I didnt have to go through this.

Most of the ER doctors and majority of the floor doctors are compassionate, however I must speak on a fairly new doctor named Dr. Gomez ib the ER. I think he got his medical license from the Demonic Medical School! That man (and I say that loosely) is the nastiest person I have ever encountered in any hospital. I have lupus, RA and a few other very painful ailments and I was being admitted by another doctor whos shift was over and Gomez took over her shift. Now I have alot of allergies to pain medicine and my own doctor prescribes a very strong pain medicine for me. I carry my documentation around to any er or hospital setting to show I am not an addict, that I am legally prescribed the medication. The other dictor had no problem giving it to me at all, but Gomez would not give me ANYTHING for pain even after I presented my paperwork and told him to call my doctor and verify it.....he said "HECK NO, I am not giving u anything but Tylenol." I was in tears wrapped in pain for 6 more hours! By the time I made it upstairs, I couldnt even talk to the admitting doctors upstairs I hurt so bad. They had to give me a double dose to stablize me in order to get me admitted. They said I needed to report him to the medical board and the higher ups at the hospital. Oh, and I used to work here at HU for 8 years on the 3rd floor till I became ill. So I do know people. Dr Gomez is your doctor? RUN RUN. or prepare to be tortured.

Was here for an eye infection. They forgot about me when they took me downstairs to see and eye specialist I had to WALK back to my room alone. When I got back to my room they had delivered my breakfast before I left, I asked them not to take it away and it was gone, I called the nurse manager and she apologized and told me she was sending someone in the room to talk to me. NEVER HAPPENED. A young student doctor came in and was rude told me I didnt need any time of pain medicine for my eye. HELLO IT IS CRUSTED SHUT, I HAD FLUID BUILDUP IN MY CHEEK AND IT WAS SWOLLEN HURT LIKE HELL! I told my nurse I didnt want him in my room again, he came back an hr later. Told him to his face I didnt want him in my room, he started yelling at me , I asked him for the name of his supervisor he told me I was getting it and stormed out. The room is disgusting, paint peeling everywhere, broken desk was in my room, they never changed my bedding. The tv barely worked, had to keep hitting it. Never again!!

Definitely the worst emergency room in the Washington DC area. The nurse was purposefully trying to hurt me because she thought my pain and being unable to answer her questions was being disrespectful. When I say she purposefully tried to hurt me, I dont mean she stopped treating me, which would be bad enough, but she was purposely sticking an IV needle in my arm like 20 times saying she couldnt find a vein. If you see my arm, I workout like crazy and its filled with veins without having to flex at all. (not trying to brag or anything, but not finding a vein is complete nonsense and was her excuse to stab me multiple times was her passive/aggressive way of being mean to me). Fortunately, or unfortunately, I was in so much other pain, her sticking me with a needle was the least of my worries, but when all was said and done, I was pretty unhappy that another human being would treat a sick patient like that, especially someone in the health care field.

If I could give half a star I would. My cousin is in this crap of a hospital and all I can do is pray that they get him out of there as soon as possible before they kill him. He is supposed to be going into long term rehab to regain the use of his legs that is if the PT does completely do more damage than what has already been done by dropping him again. The public toilet was disgusting, Ive seen cleaner going to a night club and after being there for six hours saw no janitorial staff. Unbelievably poor nurse on the shift at the time I was visiting. I believe she checked in once. The list goes on and on. If you can avoid this hospital unless you enjoy crappy care and possible merser.
