I regretfully switched from Banfield Pet Hospital to the Royal Oak Animal Hospital because Banfield was so extremely expensive. When I called around the area, surprisingly, Royal Oak Animal Hospital had the cheapest prices. I do not believe this is the case anymore. I like to be provided with information (regarding my pet, what they plan to do to my dog, when results will be back, etc.) & if you do to, I would not recommend the Royal Oak Animal Hospital. When I made my last appointment to come in, they told me my dog was up to date on everything & once I got there, they had a list of things, including a vaccine, that my dog needed. This is not the first time this has happened. I feel that should be told to me before I go to the vet. On my last visit, I was only expecting to get my dog tested for Heartworm & to purchase her Heartworm preventative medication. After I was told the list of additional things they wanted to do, I asked how much it would cost. I was told $150. After they treated my dog & I went to the front desk, the amount all of a sudden changed to $200! UNACCEPTABLE! My biggest problem I have with the Royal Oak Animal Hospital is their front desk receptionist. She is rude, cold, unprofessional and belittling. She accused my fully potty trained dog of peeing in the receptionist area, when in fact, that was not the case, as I saw the dog that did the deed. When you walk in, she doesnt even greet you. Without even saying hello, I was told to get my dog on the scale. I have been going to this vet for over a year & she still doesnt remember who my dog is. Shouldnt she be able to see the schedule & have some idea of what animal is coming in next? When I made my last appointment, the man I scheduled it with told me to bring in a stool specimen. I had no idea why, because they provide little information, but I listened to him & brought in the specimen. When I handed the front receptionist the specimen she was extremely belittling, talked to me as if I was unintelligent, & then asked why I brought the specimen in. The employees that work there do not communicate with each other at all. She then walked off & I had to ask if I was supposed to follow her, which apparently I was & I was just supposed to know. She took me to the room & didnt shut the door behind her. When I went back to the desk to checkout, she COMPLETELY IGNORED ME, rather than having common courtesy & letting me know someone else was going to come out & speak to me. I have complained about this woman twice now & the Royal Oak Animal Hospital staff do not seem to care. I work with clients everyday & I would not have a job if I treated them the way this woman treats people. I think this vet office has potential if they learned to communicate better & if they implemented common courtesy, such as introducing themselves when they walk into the room to treat my dog. In their defense, they were good to my dog when they were treating her in the room. They held her & soothed her, which was much appreciated. Unfortunately, I would not recommend the Royal Oak Animal Hospital to others &, after my last visit, I question why I still take my dog there. I dont trust them with my dog anymore. I think its time to look for a new vet... :(

My dog had a recent emergency situation had a drain tube inserted below his stitch wound. I dont have a vet yet as he is still up to date with shots since I got him. From the start, the woman on the phone just didnt seem to like her job. She wasnt very friendly and when I went in to get my dogs drained removed she was completely unattached. I had to introduce myself in order to get her name. There was no compassion at all. Also, it smelled like pee everywhere and I could visibly see it. I understand accidents happen at vets, but you have someone clean it up. The room we were in was even worse and it was dirty. The sink was gross and the smell was so bad. I expect a vet office to be as clean as a doctors office. My dog has multiple wounds that need to stay clean, and I didnt even want my purse on the bench let alone my dog laying on the floor. The vet was nice and so was the assistant. The pricing seemed fair as well. Other than that, I have no desire to come back. I was a new patient and in my eyes, you should try to be inviting and impress me that your office should be my dogs primary care office.

Picked up my family puppy (3 mo. old labradoodle) after he was there for pet boarding last Saturday for a week. I picked him up a day earlier than the hospital expected and he was entirely covered in pee. Paws soaked and face wet too. I can understand hes not yet fully trained and may be kept in a confined space for boarding purposes but still, theres no reason he should be in that condition or that someone should have to put a pee soaked dog in their car. They couldnt even mention, "oh yeah he just peed, sorry we didnt get a chance to clean him before you got here." Once the puppy and I got home where he could run free, he was limping on one side, front and back, stumbling and falling over himself just walking around. I would be shocked to find this puppy was let out of his cage once during his stay with his apparent "sea legs," and thats assuming nothing worse happened to him while he was there. Where do you take an animal whos limping after you just picked him up from the vet?! Needless to say we wont be going back for any other services, despite our account credit for picking up a day early.

The doctors are excellent, thorough, knowledgable, and my dog loves them. My only complaint, and the only reason giving it 4/5 stars... About a month ago, we found Daisy eating grapes in our backyard, which are poisonous to dogs. I called here and asked if I need to bring her in. The receptionist didnt ask a doctor or tech, but simply told me to wait and see if she starts showing symptoms of being sick, then bring her in. Naturally, I made a post on Facebook telling my friends what was going on. One of my friends, who works as a tech at an emergency vet, immediately commented that we need to bring Daisy in right away, because by the time she showed symptoms of being sick it might be too late. So, we took her to an emergency vet in Madison Heights, where they kept her overnight for tests and fluids, resulting in a charge of $1100 (way too high...). But, Id rather pay that much to make sure my dog is fine than wait until shes acting sick and have it be too late. Moral of the story, I love the doctors here, but make sure if you have a medical question that the receptionist asks a doctor or tech.

Ive been going to this vet since 1997 - when they were at the old location at 10 mile & Main St. They have always been professional, caring and honest. Ive had many discussions over the years with each of the doctors and have always believed they were truthful and honest regarding the treatment and care of my animal. As my animal nears the end of his lifecycle they continue to be the very best and I highly recomend these doctors and their staff. I noticed the review regarding unecessary tests - Ive always discussed the pros and cons of every proceedure and in the end made the decision myself. I highly recomend the Royal Oak Animal Hospital.
