When we discovered a grounded Loon on the street in front of our home, we didnt know what to do! Believing it was injured, I called about eight different places to see if the Loon could be helped, including our local police, several local vets and several different wildlife hospitals. Less than 30 mins after leaving a message at Fellow Mortals we received a call and was told they would absolutely be happy to take the Loon into their care. They gave me suggestions on how to keep the Loon safe and transport her to them and within minutes my neighbors helped me get the Loon into my mini van! I drove from Antioch to Lake Geneva with the Loon contained, safe and quiet and my two young daughters were amazed and concerned over their rescue, whom they named "Luna". When we arrived at the peaceful Fellow Mortals hospital, Jess greeted us at our van and sweetly took the huge Loon from my van to the back of their hospital where she was given x-rays and medication for small wounds she received when she was dragging her body on the pavement. She was then quickly placed in their in-house pool and happily swimming and calming down. Jess took such amazing time in speaking with me and my daughters about this amazing bird and taught us that she very likely mistook our street for water. Our small neighborhood has water on either side of it and our street happens to likely look like a water pathway from one waterway to the other. We learned that Loons are strictly water birds and physically cannot stand or take off in flight from land! We hated leaving her but knew that she was in great hands! Jess could see that my girls were concerned and interested in the outcome for our Luna :) and we received a phone call from Fellow Mortals later on in the day, which isnt their normal procedure, to tell my girls that Luna was perfectly healthy and was released at a lake near their hospital! My girls literally teared up with joy! To give my daughters that little extra bit of attention - to teach them about their rescue, to tell them the outcome, truly inspired my girls! Already animal lovers, my girls eyes were opened to a new way of taking care of them and thought that maybe someday they, too, would become vets and help wounded animals the way their Luna was helped! THANK YOU Fellow Mortals for making this such a wonderful, educational experience for my girls!
