Last week I went into the ER with severe pain, tightness in the chest, and trouble breathing (it was not anaphylaxis, but rather felt like a heart attack). I told this to the staff. My initial wait was only about a half hour...in which I spent looking at how FILTHY the waiting area was. It was 3am in the morning when I went in...the floors hadnt been swept, there was trash lying around everywhere, there were puke buckets sitting around for random people to just pick up and hold w/o being sanitized between...just disgusting. They had some guy come out with a broom that swept up the big chunks of trash and just pushed the remaining dirt around. Then he came out with a broom and "mopped". Neither time did he bother to move any chairs and clean under them. With the inadequate sweeping it did nothing but wet the dirt. Well, I finally got pulled to a "room". It was a curtained area with no bed. My IV line was put in (though no IV, just the line) and asked what I was being seen for (though no notes were being made in any chart or anything...no follow up questions, nothing). The room was no cleaner than the waiting area (which made me very uneasy and disgusted knowing my skin was being punctured). I was stuck sitting in a chair where they FORGOT I WAS THERE for 2 hours. I was right by the "nurses" station. The nurses were too busy gossiping about their personal drinking habits, which doctors were lazy, and which nurses refused to do charting...so for those 2 hours I sat waiting I heard a lot of stories that made me wonder why the hell I put my life in the hands of these idiots. Next, they finally came to get me and put me in an actual bed. I was wheeled into Hub A (or whatever it was called) where I was stuck in the bed in the hallway with no privacy (no means to sleep, no privacy for my personal information when asked questions, nothing). Nurses kept passing by, doctors, too, but it took them over an hour to get to me there. I was finally scheduled to have an ultrasound and xray. I was taken back at 7am for my ultrasound where the technician whined that he had to get off his ass (and phone) and see a patient. Then I was taken promptly to xray, where the lady doing the xrays was actually quite nice, prompt, and professional. Then back to the hallway to wait again...another hour passes by and I was given antacid (they must love these things) and medicine for being nauseated. Still no IV for fluids and I was not allowed to eat or drink. Finally the nurse stopped by to tell me I have gallstones. She didnt say anything about the size, options for treatment, anything. I was told I would be sent up for observation and to have more tests run. I was taken up to observation shortly after (shockingly). When I got up to the room it was about 8:30am. They sent in the short stay nurse, who was very nice...Karen was her name I believe. They took more time documenting my belongings than they did tending to my actual health. Finally when all that was over I was left alone in my room until 1pm (was scheduled to have test done at 12:30). After that hour long test I was sent back and returned for another test at 3pm. I still had no IV bag, still not allowed to eat or drink at this point. After that test was over I waited on the nurse to return with my results. I was told that I had two options: A) surgery or B) medication. I told them I wanted to leave and have the surgery at a later date but to please prescribe me the medication in the mean time (which they did not do). I was given no instructions on diet (though after speaking with my primary physician I have learned I am to be on a VERY STRICT diet). The surgeon simply just told me my options and said since it was not infected it was not immediate. Also, since I was not given an IV bag or allowed to eat or drink, I got dehydrated and now have a yeast infection on top of everything. GREAT GOING, DOCTORS! I had to request my medical records after the fact to see what it was they were supposed to tell me during my visit. I transferred everything to U of M. Good riddance, Oakwood!

Not many visits over 15 year period. Emergency only one horrible -5 emergency room experience the 4 others all previous to the horrible one rank 3.5. Front Line Emergency Staff 3.5 to 3.9 Location: structure and cleanliness interior and exterior and night time lighting. Location 4.5- Interior cleanliness 2.8 exterior 3.0 the landscaping is beautiful. The lighting used in the landscaping helps to light the area in the evening. When you get out to the street side the lighting is lacking and the landscaping does allow for a number of unsafe and hidden areas. The exterior grounds were maintained. Compacted location I must admit the architect had their work cut out for them as the facility grew and the available space remained unchanged. The facility can hardly continue to grow and build on its current sight. Clean the carpeted areas more frequently a friend of mine was appalled at the carpet filth. A visit to one area of the building was in a second floor suite at the end of an open hall the ventilation was deplorable and the smell coming from the bathroom near the office permeated the entire area. Parking can be difficult due to the size and configuration of the lot and structure. Give yourself additional time unless you use the voucher available parking. 2.5 Have seen 6 doctors at this now Beaumont location. Doctors that make their rounds after midnight, to doctors that are accommodating, to those who will give a diagnosis and walk away, doctors who could get lost in the files and notes on the desk and those who think you will wait hours after a scheduled appointment have all been encountered. The exceptional 5+ The deplorable -5. Receptionist 4.0 Surgeons and surgical team 4.9 Fact Finding and pre surgical consultations: 2.5 to 3.5 Understanding and not assuming the response to a persons answer as one may be use to hearing. Security at the main hospital and adjacent buildings 3.5 Nurses. 2.5-3.0 lodge your complaints with the appropriate staff and supervisor or on up the ladder, violation of privacy by using the names of others in the hospital is not cool, (gossip). In this area I could rank a 5.0 for some and others 2.0, uncaring rude unprofessional, thankfully several other staff took the rudeness to the supervisor and the nurse came back with a much kinder attitude and touch that was greatly appreciated. I would continue to use this facility in the future if needed. It is noteworthy to see reviews being responded to.

Yesterday morning, my elderly grandmother was rushed to Oakwood Hospital ER in Dearborn. Common with most Emergency Room experiences, we spent most of the day there while they provided her care. To be fair, Ill start with the positive experiences. Pros: 1. The nursing and tech staff was relatively friendly and obtainable. They were good about getting her an IV or pillow and routinely checked to see if she was comfortable. 2. There was plenty of roaming security officers and no shortage of staff to assist with directions. 3. The new area of the hospital as you enter from the South Parking Garage was very nice. Cons: 1. My grandmother did not receive thorough medial care. A. The visits from an actual Doctor or Physicians Assistant was very infrequent. B. After X-Rays, CTScan and other medical attention, they determined her to be stable and transportable. Prompted by her insurance they opted to transport her to another hospital. After arriving at the new hospital, it was discovered that she had 3 (THREE!) undiscovered fractures in her shoulder. C. After additional labwork at the new hospital it was determined that she had severe potassium deficiencies, something that should have been detected in the 5 vials of blood or urine samples that was taken at Oakwood. D. Motivation for care was heavily impacted by her insurance provider. Once it was determined that her insurance was provided via HAP, Oakwood wanted to transfer her to a HAP affiliated hospital if possible. This is fine and understandable, though the lack of attention to the situation and motivation to investigate left my poor grandmother in a state of limbo for over 6 hours. Really? Six hours? 2. Parking is $3 on entry, not an unreasonable fee though if you need to leave and come back, you must pay again. 3. Emergencies happen at all hours and Emergency Care often spans many hours. The Oakwood Cafeteria however does not match the 24 hour service of the ER. So, word of caution-- eat your dinner before going to the ER or youre going to be stuck to whatever you can find out the vending machine. 4. The waiting area of the ER seemed to be stuck in 1989. Everything could use updating.
