I honestly am not sure why the reviews are so low for this amazing hospital. My m-i-l is in ICU as we speak (and has been for they past three days) and this has been THE BEST, I repest THE BEST medical staff and hospital experience I have ever experienced, not only for my mother-in-law but also in comparison to care I or my family have received at larger, more "popular" or established hospitals. My husband and I dont even live locally (originally from the area though)! We drove 2 hours because my m-i-l lives here and I have to say, bar-none, the staff has been caring, patient, attentive and more than professional. Theyve treated us like family really, taking time to actually talk with us, explain in detail her status and their plan of action and do so with compassion and patience. But they even go a step further and actuality LISTEN to us...all of our "boring" family stories, details about our kids, concerns we have...they listen and converse WITH you, not just rushing off after they check the machines and administer treatment to the patient. And I dont just mean the amazing ICU staff who, by the way seriously need applause and several raises, but the Emergency Care staff was just as patient, considerate and compassionate! I mean weve been here non-stop for 3 days straight and one of the Emergency Care staff (Ed I believe is his name-thanks again for my hubbys coffee!) who initially cared for my m-i-l recognized us in the hall 3 days later and stopped just to talk with us, ask about her and ask about how WE were doing (Im 8.5 moz preggers too)! The nurses in ICU (So far Ive met Kat-also almost 9 moz pregnant, Crystal, Terry, and two others whose name I cant recall-sorry preggers brain!) are AMAZING. My poor hubby was sleeping in a chair for 3 days, refusing to leave moms side of course, and they found him a more comfy chair that reclines! Seriously. We are extremely grateful for the staff here and the care that shes receiving. Shes still being cared for and were hoping for the best outcome, which were highly anticipating due in very large part to this staff. My hubby even felt comfortable enough-with my urging of course :)-to step away from the hospital room and get a couple of hours of sleep in a real bed because we knew shes being WELL cared for. And I literally just got off of the phone with Terry in ICU who (of course only after following HIPPA protocol, asking for the code required before accessing any medical info for my m-i-l) gave me further updates just for our peace of mind this early morning. She was just as patient and considerate and professional as ALL of the other staff. I will say-in full disclosure-that the staff at the front entrance of the Emergency Care seem a bit distracted amongst one another (kinda just hanging out talking to each other), but they were still available for what we needed and nice enough so no big deal there at all. All-in-all, I am truly sorry to those whose experience at this hospital was sub-par, but I CANNOT, for the life of me, understand these bad reviews and thought Id shine some positive light on this wonderful little hospital. Keep it up Garden City and thank you for all that you do! See you in a few hours!

I was horrified with the experience I had in their ER. I am writing this to all of you in warning, but I also want it where the hospital can see it! Some things really need to change around here! My friend is 63 years old and like a grandmother to me. I met the ambulance at the hospital and waited with her in the little curtained room for 5 hours waiting for xrays on a knee injury. During this time, there was a moaning man on the other side of the curtain. The way he cried out made my heart sick. "Ooooh! Oh! Oh! Help! Help me! Oh, God! God, please take me home! Lord, just take me! I cant take the pain! I feel so bad! Oh! Oooh!" A nurse would intermittently go into his room, tell him to be quiet, and would then return to the desk to chat with the rest of the staff about non-medical-related things... gossip, basically. They were not answering phones, doing triage, or walking around to check on patients. While my friend was in xray, I couldnt take it anymore and went in to see if he wanted someone to sit with him. I took a hit to the chest every time a nurse or doctor tried to silence him... and I took a hit to the chest every time that silence broke with his cries. Trained professionals who should have been helping their patients get out of pain were pretending it didnt exist in his body. No one validated the fact that he was in pain. No one thought to spend time listening to him or comforting him. They dragged their feet in to reprimand him and then ran back out. It was disgusting and despicable. I looked for a break in the curtain behind me and parted it enough so I could enter. It was a pitiful sight, but the man in the bed turned his face to me with a hopeful look. I told him my name and asked if he would like me to stay and wait with him until they could take him to xray. "Oh, yes! Please stay. Would you really stay here with me?" I took his hand and told him I would. His name is John. His sons had to go to work and he had been alone all morning. Soon I had him laughing and joking. As he and I talked, I noticed the impact it made on his pain. His moaning became less frequent and his body began to relax. The more he laughed, the more his pain eased. I witnessed the power of faith and hope. It is easier to endure our darkest times when someone steps in to hold our hand and tell us we are not alone. But no one in that hospital bothered. It breaks my heart to know these doctors and nurses are ignoring their patients. They sent him home even as he begged them not to. He had been there the day before and had been sent home only to return the next day. He lived in a retirement home. They refused to give him pain medication while he waited for his bowels to pass because of constipation, but there are ways to help! Especially when immediate surgery is not an issue. I know! I have completed pre-nursing! After an xray, they found out he also had a blood clot. If they had listened to him before, all the signs were there. But they had refused. I can only guess he returned again the following day with no improvement...

Today around 5 oclock in the morning I woke up with extreme, I mean extreme sharp pain in my back from my spinal cord to the right flank side. I woke up sweating, vomiting, and just crying from the pain. I decided to get it checked out because I was thinking it was a kidney stone. Of course I made the horrible decision of going to Garbage City Hospital because it was close by my house and I just want to get it checked out. When I arrived, the doctor came in and right away told me saying " we will not treat your chronic pain symptoms so you might just leave or you can still get the tests but we can only offer you Tylenol." I was embarrassed and furious because I was explaining to them this was not something chronic. I do not have back problems, I do have arthritis throughout my legs ankles and feet. Otherwise no back problems. So basically they just threw the discharge papers on me and told me to leave, they escorted me out with security guard when I was weak as hell. My Auntie took me to Henry Ford ER and they treated me like a human being. Henry Ford ER made sure I was comfortable, they gave me fluids for my dehydration, nausea medicine and pain medication. They made the right decision by giving me two CAT scans, found out I did have a nice size kidney stones in my left kidney, and also I just found out that I have a shortened spine and degenerative disc disease. So Garbage City, am I really a drug seeker now? Are you really going to question chronic pain patients about their regular chronic pain? Are you going to actually listen to patients who are complaining of different pain to get checked out? No wonder why you have a two star rating you treat people like crap, Henry Ford in Dearborn got four stars for their ER because people are treated with respect and dignity when were not feeling good. I hope you learn from this experience because sometimes you killed people in your care. They will complain of pain and you say oh thats nothing, and the next day they died of a heart attack. Take some compassionate courses, learn about how to be more sensitive and not coldhearted.
