The nurse on swing shift, Shelly who works with dr. Zitek in emergency on 7-20-17, when ask to get off the AMRS gerhney and walk in the room and get on the bed. I was very explicit I couldnt even walk. I heard another nurse say "he doesnt belong in this dept" and RN Shelly said to AMR to just push he in the room and slide he on the bed. The AMR driver said there are no rails on that bed to nurse Shelly. Shelly asked the drivers to push me and the bed against the wall before they left.. 2 different PAS came in my room and kept telling me the dr. would be in-i believe UMC does this with PAS to raise their bill because I have good insurance, each PA asked the very same questions- on the second PA I became suspicious and demanded to see a dr.. The dr. Zitek came in and ask what was me expectations from todays visit!! Never had this happen in ANY MEDICAL FACILITY. And I have had both total hip replacements, left shoulder rotate cuff, left knee 3 surgeries, right knee 1 surgery, and I could go on- I was there because I was in between my second and 3rd epidural on my L4-L5 lower back. Tried to get out of my rocker recliner and felt something give, couldnt move and had to call ambulance. Dr. Zitek heard my story and that i didnt like several PAS asking same question, I was CONSTANTLY begging for something for pain, and was constantly told it was coming. A pain shot came approximately an hour and half after arriving into my room at UMC on Charleston Ave. As the nurse Shelly gave me the shot, and both PA s kept expressing how you just have this pain when your discs are bulged or herniated. I kept explaining I knew pain and something happened or I would have rode down in my own car not ambulance. She discounted my pain stain her husband as the exact same thing and comes home from work weekly with this same pain. I explained to her that I cant feed myself or care for myself home alone. Nurse Shelly told me that I could live for 90 days without eating. My girlfriend is younger than myself and she ask her age, she knew mine, and Shelly made comment about her age right there in front of her!! I CANT BELIEVE THE UMC HOSPITAL STAFF, AND MY GIRLFRIEND WAS SITTING IN THE ROOM AND HEARD ALL THIS !! When Dr. Zitek ask what was my expectations today? I told him I need my back checked, I need something for pain, I fear something worse has happened to my back !! He stated, in front of both of us, that I was allowed to skip in front of 9 patients because I came in an ambulance, and yes he will get me something for the pain and get me an xray. I told him Ive been told that you cant tell from xray if its bulged, heniated or exploded. Dr. Zitek said he could tell from just xrays maybe others cant. I also complained to him about the bed had no rails and the head didnt go up or down, I was told I was against the wall and nothing would happen to me. He left me in my room after xray for a good 1 and half to 2 hours until his shift ended before he came back. Told me L5 looked herniated! ! Said he would give me prescription for inflammation, predizone, and a mild pain killer. I told he this would NOT give me relief for 4 more days until my next epidural! ! Dr. Zitek said he believed it would, I said if it doesnt? He said come back and will go to the next plan. I asked him to give me an mri, because I believe theres more problems. DR. ZITEK LAUGHED AT IN FRONT OF MY GIRLFRIEND saying "what do you want me to do call nerology and ask them to mri your back? I said yes !! DR. LAUGHED AT ME AGAIN AND SAID THEY WOULDNT DO IT !!! DO NOT GO HEAR, THERES MORE.

Awesome Trauma Center! Four stars. The rest of it is a dump and the nurses are horrid! If you are critically injured this is the place to be for quality care. They will save your life. Great care from Trauma Center staff; attentive, caring, professional, compassionate and thoughtful. Once transferred, God help the patient without family to micromanage their care! The rest of the hospital is filthy dump, HIPAA violations abound and nursing staff need to reassess their career choices because they clearly HATE people. This is a county hospital, so even if you have great insurance (you will be over billed and), you will be turfed in a room with a revolving door of homeless and mentally ill people malingering to get out of the heat. How are you supposed to rest with all that crazy going on? Mildredful and the rest of the day shift/ mafia that run 3W make it clear they hate you, their jobs and have far better things to do than actually care for patients. They WILL talk smack about you and everyone else in Tagalog and ignorantly believe you cant understand them. Educated enough to ask a question or remind them of Drs orders/tests/care that contradict their self-appointed greatness? They will become so passive-aggressive and disgusting you cant get your loved one out of there fast enough. Yes, really. 3W day shift will leave a full (of poop) portable commode (from another patient in another room) next to your door. You will have to move it when you get tired of smelling it because they never will. Disgusting. Hey, Mildredful, next time we will move your little "present" into the staff break room, OK? 3W day shift will ignore your loved one, and you or other family member will end up bathing them, changing their bed linens, managing their care, ensuring Drs orders are followed and feeding them. Arent nurses or CNAs supposed to do that? Arent nurses supposed dispense medication (especially narcotics) and treatments? Then why did the nurse simply hand treatments to a family member and say "take care of it, OK?" Isnt that illegal? Housekeeping staff try very hard to keep the place clean, but it is a dump, so they can only do so much. PRAY and wash your hands like you have OCD so that your family member does not get a secondary infection! PT, OT, RT staff are helpful, knowledgeable and compassionate, but you will never see them as often as Drs ordered. They are just too overburdened. Social workers are helpful, cheerful, professional and caring, but also scarce too. Bottom line: great trauma center, but the minute your loved one is stable, get them transferred to another hospital STAT! Review your bill with a microscope because it will be riddled with inaccuracies and overcharges.

My brother was recently admitted into UMC with severe head trauma. While he was in the ICU they took wonderful care of him. I am certain that entire team is the reason he is still alive today. There were a lot of nurses and staff that tended to him but the two that stood out the most were nurse Tim and Marycruze. My family as well as myself feel they both went above and beyond for my brother. Every time Tim was on duty we knew my brother was in great hands. We spent almost 2 weeks in the ICU and Tim made sure we understood everything that was going on and he was on top of everything. He caught that my brothers pupil had blown. Since he caught it so fast they were able to do surgery quick and reduce the chances of more damage. As for Marycruze she also kept us well informed. She has to be one of the most hard working nurses I have ever seen. She was constantly checking vitals, fluids, and the overall status of my brother. She worked non stop, I never saw her one time stop and take a break to chat with the other nurses who were standing up at the desk. UMC is very lucky to have these two nurses on their staff. With all that being said, my brother got transferred to the third floor and I personally feel that it was not the best. The room seemed a bit dirty. Half the tiles on the ceiling were turning yellow/brown and the room always seemed unorganized when I went to visit. Which was everyday. Also, whenever I would ask the day nurses how he was doing I could barely understand them. Huge language barrier. He was just transferred to the 5th floor yesterday and this room is even worse than the third floor. They have him in a room with one small window, the walls look like they havent been painted since the 60s, and the wash room door appeared to have blood on it. It feels very depressing being in that room. I feel like when you are at a hospital trying to get better they shouldnt be placing any patients in a room that can possible cause the patient to become depressed. Overall, the care that is being provided is great/good. The overall appearance of the hospital rooms is bad. I understand that the hospital is old, but the people staying in these rooms are our loved ones and they deserve to heal in a clean room that looks welcoming.
