Ive tried to write this review a dozen times now. Its difficult to put into words the rough rocky patch of road that cancer drags you down by both ankles. There is no easy or sunny way to describe the loss of a loved one taken by such a dreadful disease. I dont want this to be about that. What I want this to be about is the care and the care givers we were blessed to deal with during this most difficult time. In the head spinning time frame of 19 days, we went from "this might be cancer" to the end of life preparations. The news was devastating and more tests found more cancer. At this time we as a family had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Moschos and Dr. Grant. These professionals were in the position of telling a family that options were extremely limited but managed to do so in a fashion that was straight forward along with a bit of an education on the disease. Once we knew what we were up against, decision making was easy. Both doctors had a very compassionate bed side manner that made the worst news possible, easier to hear. Make no mistake, we were all devastated but what we didnt have to do is wade through any soggy false hope. It was abundantly clear what we were up against and it was obvious that my sister in laws health was declining exactly as the good doctors said it would. The decision, our decision to take the route we needed to take was somehow more palatable. I would also like to mention the quality of care my sister in law received from the RN and NA staff! Top notch, across the board! All of these people are in their chosen field because they want to be there. These were the most compassionate people Ive ever met doing one of what has to be the hardest job on the planet. As sad as I was for my family, I knew my sister in law was in the best hands in the business. The amount of comfort we all got from that was our only relief during this most difficult time. My hat is off to these people. I dislike the word amazing because of its overuse but it is fitting regarding the care, compassion and professionalism I witnessed at this hospital. Absolutely amazing!

Recently switched from UNC hospital in Chapel Hill to Duke, and have been very happy with all the new specialists we have seen at Duke relative to the quality and responsiveness of care compared to UNC. We switched all of our care from UNC, with specialties including: Cardiology Gastroenterology (Allergist said it was GI, GI said it was allergist - terrible care across dept) Allergists (Allergist said it was GI, GI said it was allergist - terrible care across dept) Immunologists Dieticians Craniofacial Pediatric Surgery Neurology Genetics Urology (Our urologist at UNC was good, Dr. Sutherland, he repaired an injury caused by Dr. Sang Lee from UNC pediatric surgery, if you need pediatric surgery, Duncan Philips at Wakemed is the preeminent surgeon in the triangle, we wish we wouldve taken the advice of other specialists when we realized we needed a pediatric surgeon - son born with imperforate anus. We did get a consult with Dr Philips, after the initial injury caused by Dr. Lee, but worried about switching institutions mid procedure) Geneticist at Duke, Dr. Shashi, diagnosed in one visit what went diagnosed by UNC geneticists for 24 months. A rare genetic disorder, kabuki syndrome. Also, Duke offers full exome sequencing, not offered at UNC. I was thoroughly impressed with Dr. Shashis ability to accomplish this given the rarity of the condition. Furthermore, Kelly Schoch a genetic counselor at Duke, quarterbacks all of my sons care with all of the various specialists at Duke, amazing systems in place at Duke so all of the different specialist are aware of his condition. Contrasted with UNC, Duke physicians seem to read medical records prior to patient visits, and come to meetings ready to discuss elements specific to their patient and offer guidance and solutions relative to their patients specific condition. This is not the case at UNC, and all visits seemed haphazard and failed to meet even the basic needs of the patient - in short terrible quality of care. Duke University Medical has been a positive experience after a fairly turbulent first two years of life.

This letter will be copied and placed on the webpages of all companies. My story begins almost a year ago. My husband ( a Duke Internal Medicine pt) was scheduled for a follow up colonoscopy after having multiple polyps found the year before. In the course of the year, my insurance changed and we secured Market place insurance with United Health Care. This was premium insurance, very expensive monthly premiums and a 250.00 deductible. The providers office did a referral, and here is where the water goes murky. Duke, at the time did not take the type of UNC insurance (compass platinum), so an appointment was mad via the providers office with UNC healthcare. My husband called UHC prior to the visit to make sure the paperwork was in order and was told" the procedure was a covered 100%"). He had the procedure, and received a bill. Part of the bill was covered but 2900.00 was not. Upon investigation per UNC, the "referral was for a screening, not diagnostic and needed a new number. The provider office said the referral did not need a number and would look into it. UHC said the referral was not correct as well. After multiple phone calls with all three groups and a lot of finger pointing between companies, the bill was turned over to collections, and UNC will not return phone calls. A customer service rep from Duke has also looked into the situation and told us today, everyone is blaming someone else. Here is the sad thing, all these companies advertise "patients first, patient centered care" etc. The patient should not be responsible for making sure referrals have a correct number, should not be responsible for making sure codes are correct. He did due diligence to make sure prior to the procedure that it was covered. The final disservice and disrespect to the patient is making them jump through hoops to find out no one is accountable but him, and no offers to help on his behalf. $2900.00 may not be a lot to some, but it is a lot to us. Add the monthly expense of the insurance premiums, for what should be covered , and this is shameful.

I fully believe that if you have a life threatening medical emergency that is serious enough to catch the attention of a doctor here, youre in the right place. As a matter of fact, many of the doctors that saw and treated my son, I was confident putting our lives in their hands. Theyre knowledgable. However, it will come at a price. If you dont have an emergency, expect lonnnnggggggg wait times. Expect to be glanced over and, at times, not even looked at thoroughly. Expect unnecessary steps. And afterwards expect HUGE confusing medical bills. I was scheduled for an induction on a Friday. I came to the hospital, checked in, was asked to enter a triage room. A nurse came in to tell me that a room was unavailable and that if I wanted to go home to avoid the cost, I could do so and come back in the morning. So thats exactly what we did. Mind you, after delivery we received a bill for $1600 JUST for the triage room which they kept US waiting for half an hour. That half hour cost us nearly as much as multiple days did in delivery. After delivery, I asked if I could receive a cash discount NOPE they dont do those at this hospital. Crazy. I asked to set up an automatic withdrawal payment plan. $100 came out of my account every month and then I got a call from collections. Be CAREFUL because UNC will split the hospital bills up into separate accounts and if you dont set up the withdrawal on every single account under UNC, they will send it to collections. After months of trying to take triage charges off since nothing was ever performed in that room in addition to being told we wouldnt be charged if we rescheduled our induction, we had to accept paying for the additional costs. If the cost of medical is not of concern for you, youre not concerned about long wait times and youre main priority is having access to very intelligent doctors, this could be a great place for you.
