PLEASE READ! My mother suffered a stroke while living at Shurmer Place in March 2017. I was called five hours after she had blatant signs of mental status change, noted in progress notes, only to find her in the dining room when I arrived. She was responding appropriately but could not speak in full sentences and had visual disturbance. These are signs of stroke. Sending her to dinner was a huge mistake as she could have choked. The director tried to convince me that because my mom was responding appropriately, they felt she was in no immediate danger. This is very bad practice and very poor nursing judgement. I cannot find any evidence that they did anything for my mom after the initial finding. This is heartbreaking and disturbing as my mother lived there for two years and they knew her well. The elderly population are at increased risk for stroke so make sure staff is knowledgeable of signs and symptoms and know their policy. Also know that medical POA has the right to medical records. Staff at Shurmer Place should have notified provider/family at the first sign of altered mental status. One prompt phone call could have changed the outcome for my mom.

My father received excellent care and treatment as an Altenheim resident for 7+ years; would strongly and highly recommend this facility. I can attest to the superior standard of service and care-giving provided 24/7. Dr.Smucker is readily available and has got to be the foremost gerontologist in the area. He kept my father alive, despite multiple medical emergencies. The staff is well-selected for friendliness, professionalism, and diligence. The facilities are spotlessly well-kept inside and out. They are expanding and are an integral part of the community. Given the high level of acuity and end-of-life issues, problems will arise inevitably. But, I always found prompt and respectful resolution of problems, people were always available and willing to help, and the needs of the residents were always cared for. I searched and interviewed over 10 Skilled Nursing Facilities in the Cleveland area before selecting Altenheim. I can honestly say I never regretted choosing Altenheim. The friendly, highly-competent staff gave my father a priceless gift, that of comfort and contentment in his final years.

My grandma went there after her surgery. She was supposed to get rehab after surgery. Instead the physical therapist would not allow her to walk. The staff had to use a wheelchair to get her to the bathroom, she wasnt even allowed to walk the 6 steps to the bathroom! She ended up getting a bed sore from sitting there for weeks! Now that she is home, she is weak. Before surgery she cooked and drove around. Now she cant even get up without assistance. The elderly lose muscle tone so fast. The physical therapy at this place did not want a fall on their record, so they kept her in a chair all day after her PT session. She would have been better off coming home and not going there for supposed rehab. The only thing she received from this facility was a bed sore and a state of decline.

The people that work there are nice and smile and call the residents by name from 9-5. But after those hours and on the weekend its just so so. The director is not nice, likes to take his frustrations out on others, is argumentative and uses pretzel logic in his arguments. His social worker Roxanne is his pawn and she is beholden to his corporate interests. If there are any elder abuse situations do not expect any help from them.
