Dr. Dorn has taken great care with my cockatiel, Maggie Mae. I am so glad to have such a wonderful Avian vet close to where I live! Maggie first saw him to get a Lupron injection to stop her (very chronic) egg-laying and its been effective as of todays report (September 2014 through June 1, 2015). She fussed more about getting her nails and wings clipped than about the shot! Dr. Dorn handled her quite caringly and gently, which I greatly appreciate! Last month, when I came home from a week away (helping my mom after her back surgery), the pet sitter had reported that Maggie wasnt eating much and commented on the consistency of her droppings. I had been observing Maggie through a webcam and it was hard to discern illness as she was perching fine. When I got her out of her cage, she laid in my hand with one wing out and with the slightest exertion, she was breathing heavily. I was so afraid Id lose her! Dr. Dorn did a fecal culture, a throat swab and was patient enough to watch a video that Id taken of her (because of course, she acted fine at the vets office!). The fecal culture came back showing an abnormal amount of bacteria. He prescribed Cipro through a dropper and Benebac and made sure I had a heat lamp with at least a 60watt bulb at home for her. He told me that I should see a difference in 3-5 days. As he said, she began acting perkier at about day 3/4 and Im continuing the meds as directed until Thursday (todays Monday). I feel glad that he gave her a long enough course of medication to make sure this will be well-and-truly gone. My mother had lost her pet cockatiel to what seemed to be a similar illness, and Dr. Dorn listened to me and I think that having a vet that listens is crucial, so thank you, Dr. Dorn! Maggie had been exposed to my mothers bird because she often travels with me for holidays unless Im traveling by train as I was this last time. Moms bird had been given tetracycline (I think - I showed him the package). So, again... he listened and I think he took this into consideration -- having chosen a different medication. Bottom line is that I trust him to care for my Maggie and wouldnt hesitate to recommend him, especially as an avian vet.

So Im going to do two separate reviews because I didnt do one for my first experience here. A little over a year ago I brought my exotic bird here after taking her to several different vets who all did different things on her that didnt help her condition. The bill was adding up greatly. I brought her here and Dr. Dorn fixed her right up and my bill was very inexpensive compared to what I was paying for pointless procedures from other vet offices. Yesterday I had called about my pup who Im not sure is having allergies or what. Most vets or even Dr offices wont give any compassion or advice over the phone and will say you have to come in. I can understand with liability and what not. I spoke with a very compassionate receptionist (I think). She then transferred me to a gentleman who gave me several options to try with my dog before having to spend loads of money for a visit. He actually took the time to listen and give me several options to try with him. He then stated they would be happy to have him come in if nothing he told me helped. We talked for several minutes and not once did he seem rushed to get off the phone. I cannot express enough my appreciation for these compassionate and friendly people who work for this vet office. I know if the problems with my pup persist after trying the options the gentleman gave me, I will be coming here.

I have been taking my dogs here for the past 8 years. Dr. Dorn is great, and I appreciate that when he doesnt know something, he is upfront about it and offers a referral to a specialist. Scott is also great, and he is always helpful and compassionate. One of my dogs can be difficult to deal with when she is upset/defensive, but the staff do a great job with her and are understanding. My only complaint is that they have my partners number down as the primary phone, even though Im usually the one scheduling appointments and taking the dogs in for them. Ive asked them to change the primary phone number a few times, and always tell them to call me, but they always call my partner instead. As others have stated the office is rather small and the waiting room is cramped, but I have never had an issue. Sometimes when they are busy you might have to wait on hold to talk to someone, but theyve been a lot better about that lately.

Dr. Dorn has always been great with my rabbits. Last year, my bunny had a neurological episode which led to paralysis of one of his hind legs. Dr. Dorn was patient and his staff are so empathetic. They squeezed me into the schedule almost everyday for nearly 3 weeks until my bunnys condition deteriorated to the worst and it was time to make a hard decision. When we made the decision to end our pets suffering Dr. Dorns staff (especially Scott) were so kind and compassionate. They made such an unbearable time much easier...and for that I am forever thankful and I refuse to see any other vet and staff. I have had several other experiences with Dr. Dorn and have always been satisfied by the care my pets received.

Dr Dorn killed my ferret. During our last visit there was so many people in there with their pets all at once. They only have a small waiting room that can barely hold 6 people and it was packed to the point that people were waiting outside to get seen. The staff were scrambling around while only one veterinary assistant was helping people inbetween bringing them into the rooms. Dr Dorn barely had time to see us and once he figured out what was wrong with our pet he gave us a diagnoses and sent us on our way without telling us how to properly treat it. Our pet died 4 days later from what I found out after the fact was a curable illness if treated properly.

Many years ago in the early 90s, when I first moved to PGH, I had heard warnings about this vet hospital. However, now that I live 5 mins away and after reading the great reviews here I decided to give them a try. Please disregard any bad things you may have heard about Dormont Animal Hospial! All the staff are extremely nice and our vet was thorough, caring, kind, & knowledgeable. Plus my vet bill for this visit probably wouldve cost $100-$200 more other places. Wont go anywhere else now! Our pup, Daisy, says thanks.

Dr Dorn and his capable staff looked after my bearded dragon when she fell ill. It ended up being a more serious illness than one that could be cured, but his supportive care and willingness to consult with another Doctor not from his practice brought me a lot of confidence in his abilities. I felt like she received the best care she could have possibly had. Even if the outcome was not ideal, I know that the everybody at WLAH worked as hard as they could to get her well.

Ive been bringing my dog to Dr. Dorn for thirteen years, and hes received excellent care. Theyre thorough without being overly test happy, willing to accommodate last minute scheduling issues, and always willing to be as helpful as they can. Despite years of shots, and some painful visits due to injury and bad hips, my dog still loves coming to the office, and is excited to see everyone there.
