I was admitted right away after a fall. Although both intake and registration people were quick to get me into the ER they were not very thoughtful to the fact that I was vomiting profusely while they continued to try to take down my information. Mind you this is all while very disoriented and obviously in need of immediate care, rather than answering insurance questions while being poked over 9 times in an effort to get an I.V. started, being secured to a back board and neckbrace, and being carted off to ct and x-rays. i was followed the whole time with an extremely rude woman with a computer asking me questions i didnt even know the answers to at the time. The people taking my x-rays and ct were WONDERFUL and i wish i could remember their names. They were very comforting, moved me with ease and explained everything they were doing throughout the process. The nurses, however, are a complete joke...and not the funny kind! It took over 4 people to get an I.V. started. I was poked in both arms simultaneously, with nurses taking turns at trying. One nurse in particular, DID NOT wear gloves, tore the packaging with her mouth and unfortunately I have an infectious disease. Not only was I worried about a bacterial infection but also concerned about infecting her. I honestly can still not believe their lack of compassion, the way they sat at the nurses station laughing and carrying on about nothing to do with patients or medicine. But once i had pushed my button and asked for a nurse, no one came. After a second time and 30 minutes later a tech came and I told him i needed to use the restroom. He said hed get a nurse. Still no one came, although i watched 4 or 5 walk by. I unhooked my blood pressure minitor and took off the finger pulse thing, causing the machine to beep enough that another male tech came in and said HE would get a nurse! Another 30 minutes later I unhooked myself from the connection to my IV and neckbrace, put my clothes on in very much pain and took myself to the restroom, directly across the nurses station. I then put my arm on the desk and asked to have my I.V. taken out so that i could go to another hospital that would actually give me care. Mind you my pain level had sky rocketed by this point as well and since no nurse cared about that either, I was really pushed over the edge. I was met with 6 women staring at me until one of them pulled out a form and said i needed to sign a waiver stating i was leaving against medical advice. I told her I would sign nothing, unless it said i was leaving because I DID NOT receive care. I went back to my room to collect the rest of my things and my doctor met me seconds later. I must give him credit, because HE was wonderful. I explained my frustration and told him that the pain was overwhelming and i was not going to lie there and wet the bed and that the nurses were in the wrong profession. Believe me, i know it takes awhile to get back ct and x-ray results, that was not the issue here. He himself looked the rest of me over, assured me the blunt force trauma to my head showed nothing abnormal from the tests, explained discharge info, prescribed me pills for nausea, muscle relaxers and pain medication and then he himself promptly brought back a nurse and watched as she took my IV out. I WILL NEVER GO TO THIS HOSPITAL AGAIN!! AND I DON"T RECOMMEND ANYONE ELSE DOES EITHER!!

Subject: Emergency Room procedures and lack of compassion of staff and inability to comfort: Hospitals are supposed to help comfort and reassure. Your staff fell far short of helping me. Your staff made assumptions about my case and disregarded my telling them that it was a nerve and spine issue causing the pain. The doctor who saw me the first time got in her head I had a kidney stone even though I reiterated to her on several occasion it was my back and spasms sending severe pain down my left leg. The spasms were excruciating. The staff pretty much treated me like I was seeking drugs and dismissed the fact that I was in severe pain and threatened me with a mental evaluation. The male nurse kept saying I was asking him to push drugs and that is a lie. Not once did I ask for drugs I only wanted to find the cause of these severe pains and if necessary be admitted to the hospital to bring the pain under control. The nurse said that they couldn’t admit me because Good Samaritan was a Heart hospital. At that point I refused any treatment as they (The staff) were treating me like a mental case instead of someone in severe pain. This attitude exacerbated the situation and increased my anxiety to a very high level. They pushed me to the limit as far as their treatment of me. They did a CT scan on my stomach looking for a kidney stone even though I kept telling them it was my back and nerve causing the spasms. With each successive spasm (about every 15 minutes) the pain got worse. In the end I did not want to be in your hospital anymore as I felt the staff was discriminating against me due to some preconceived notion that I was seeking drugs. I called my daughter. She came and picked me up. When I arrived home the pain became so bad that my daughter called for an ambulance. At which point I had them take me to St Joseph. At St Joseph they were finally able to bring the pain under control and they did an MRI which indentified the source of the acute pain and spasms. I went to my doctor on Monday 10/24 and have a follow up with a specialist for my pain issues that are spine and nerve related….Not a kidney stone. Bottom line...If I can help it, I will never go to Good Samaritan Hospital again should I have any issues that require emergent care. As an FYI the only compassionate person that helped me and was comforting was the man who took me in for the CT scan. He was very comforting. I think his name was Jim or James. He did his job with compassion and understanding. Please thank him.

I have no choice but to give 1 star. Does not even deserve that. Went with my mom last night to the ER as she was having problems with her back and legs and could not really walk. Waiting area was empty and they took her to triage immediately after checking her in. Was sent back to waiting area, waited about 10 min and then was taken back to a room. They asked her to put a gown on and gave her some blankets. She struggled to get the gown on due to the pain she was in. She then struggled to get up on to the bed and was never offered any help to do so. So, after all this, the Dr came in, touched her lower back to find out where the pain was and prescribed her pain meds and she was given an injection for pain and was told to follow up with her primary. They made her struggle with the gown for nothing. They could have looked at her back without putting her through all that by simply just having her lift up her shirt a bit. It was just her lower back. It really felt like it was a trip just for pain meds and be on your way and let your primary deal with this. My mom was hoping for answers and got nothing. We went to the pharmacy to get the meds and the lady behind the counter told her that her insurance had expired and said she could give her a deal if she wanted to pay just $24.00. My mom said no, my insurance is not expired and the lady did some stuff and said oh you are right and charged a copay of $1.39. My mom said that is a better deal. What would this lady have done with the extra money if my mom had just paid the $24.00?! Or if it was someone else who had no clue and just paid it because they were too out of it to think clearly? Just makes me wonder how often this might happen. On top of all this, this place is absolutely filthy. So much so that you wonder if they even have a cleaning staff. There were MANY staff sitting around doing nothing but visiting (thats how it seemed anyhow) at the main desk in the ER area. The bathrooms (which I had to clean the toilet seat myself since it was SOOO gross (I wont go into detail about that), but I couldnt wait which is what I really wanted to do), the waiting area, the ER room was all disgustingly filthy. The trash cans in the room didnt even have lids and there was a smaller make shift garbage can in the corner and all the trash is exposed. When looking around the room there was no order whatsoever. Maybe the all staff who was doing nothing could do something and at least sweep or something!
