I want to thank all the people at the Miami Veterans Administration hospital for the excellent care I received last week. I was admitted this last Wednesday evening after experiencing horrible pain in my abdomen. This occurred two hours after being released from a local hospital here for the same symptoms I experienced the day before. My Linda drove the 45 miles in heavy traffic (that in itself is an a real pain) - it took over an hour and a half but we finally made it. To say I never felt this kind of pain is an understatement. The emergency doctor ordered a shot of morphine to calm the pain and then had a CT scan performed to discover that I had gall stones obstructing my gall bladder. Friday evening my gall bladder was removed and I was discharged on Sunday. I want to express my appreciation to all the doctors that monitored my case and performed the operation. However, I want to also extend my sincere gratitude to the nurses that cared for me during my stay. Carida, Elsa and Marisa you are angels sent from GOD. Your professional attitude and the compassion you showed me helped me recover. Everyone at the VA Miami hospital treated me with respect as a Army veteran. In closing, anyone who tells you that the Veterans Administration does not do a good job does not know what they are talking about. GOD Bless the VA. I am happy to say that I am already feeling fine after returning home to my wonderful wife Linda and my two precious Shih Tsus - Kukla and Sally.

My husband would not be alive today were it not for the care he received at this V. A. Hospital. From the first night we arrived in the ER 3 years ago, they have saved his life on more than one occasion. Despite the sheer size of this facility and the thousands of veterans it serves daily, we have made many friends among the staff...doctor,, nurses, food service, prosthetics, receptionists in 5 different specialties etc. It was overwhelming at first, but people at the Bruce. W. Carter V. A. Hospital, and our local Key West Clinic really do care! For those of you who feel " lost in the system", start with your local clinic medical staff first and have them refer you if needed. There is a system in place and while it is not perfect, it does function well. If you cannot access the service you need in a timely fashion and you believe you have been overlooked, then call the Patient Advocate Office for further advice. We will always be grateful to the Medical Staff at Bruce. W. Carter. Their care and followup over several years of chronic health issues has been exemplary.

It is not the best hospital in the world that is for sure. In the outside it looks old, and it is not in a good neighborhood. In the inside it smells like mold and it is evident that the building has not been maintained properly throughout the years. There is also an insufficient amount of parking spaces. Just think typical government building; very nice when inagurated, but then throughout the years due to lack of maintenance the building quickly looks deteriorated. I do agree with the other poster that there are A LOT of medical students working there, and that many of the doctors are arrogant; but to tell you the truth most people that study medicine these days do not do it to help out the common patient but instead to get rich. Do not go to this hospital thinking you will be recieving top A+ medical treatment. If it is a life or death matter I would prefer to go somewhere else. In addition do not expect to receive speedy service, even if you arrive for your appointment on time.

So bad Im about to write my congressman (not joking)on the horrible service. Ive been going here for years and the service is atrocious. To even reach anyone to talk to is impossible. PCP make you wait about 4-6 for an appointment and if you just want a consult (depleted uranium, traumatic brain injury) i must wait those 6 weeks, plus wait 2 weeks for him to put the consult and an additional 2-3 weeks for the actual appointment. I am in the process for filing for PTSD (combat vet) and Ive spent months just being redirected and cycled through without getting any results. If you are a recent combat vet trying to get tests done, I heard West Palm one is better. The 2 hour drive from Miami is better than the 2 year wait from Miami.

Miami VA Hospital staff has provided me with excellent care for the last 5 years. The department’s staff had been courteous and efficient in my care and follow up calls or emails when needed after procedures/tests. its shows that they care. True the bureaucracy at any VA Hospital leaves a lot to be desired and it is impossible to call any VA Department so I use the MyHealthVet Secure Messaging System with any problems and that works much better. I am nice to the staff and they reciprocate in kind, try that approach which works. If you see something wrong contact Miami Patient Advocates via the secure message or go to their office at the VA and you will see results.

The Doctors are great as well as the Physical Therapy staff but the nurses on the floor I was on were Rude and showed no compassion or that they cared about the veterans that were with me in the hospital. The Chief of staffs office as well as the senior staff over the hospital obviously lost all the phone because no one from those departments ever call you back as promised. They are week and wand to hide behind their walls that protect them from herring just how rotten their hospital staff member and how they fail to do their jobs. The VA Administration in Washington D.C. Needs to come in and start knocking some heads around. Bay Pines is worse.

I have been dealing with my problem on sleep apnea, this medical fasility is the worse, I have a broken machine, for two years, the doctor gave me an appointment for a new machine after the third sleep test, which took almost a year, and yestarday the tech, says they cannot give a new machine, because i currently have on my possesion the old broken one, he explains the doctor does not know policy when i told him my appointment letter says i need a new one. I have lost many jobs applications and opportunities because of this problem, and now I loose many work hours on my current job and the Miami Va system still dont care about.

Its a progressive patient care center .. great minds of medical personelle and top notch medical doctors. Miami University (Hurricanes), Miami Dade College, Miami University & Jackson Memorial Hospitals, students & interns are learning medical care at Miami VA Medical Center throughout all of the clinics .. A few downfalls is 1) Pharmacy wait time is often long waits .. 2) Parking your car anywhere in that quadrant of the city is nearly impossible .. best option is to park you car at a metrorail station and take a metrotrain to the Hospital district. 3) Cafeteria and the store are very expensive ..

The mature females working at the front desk in the Emergency Room are courteous, professional and respectful. The younger African American females are low class, no phone etiquette, disrespectful and downright ghetto. The heart of the problem is the VA trying to help and hire people who should be working at your local fast food joint not interacting with VETERANS who put their lives on the line to serve this great country. For those who would assume or pull the race card. Last I looked in the mirror I am black and have no problem spilling the gospel of truth.
