I have had a lot of questions regarding my recent stay at our local hospital, Lakeway Regional Medical Center. This hospital has had nothing but negative press since it opened a little over a year ago and I, personally, decided that I would never go there. On Sunday, March 23, I found myself in rapidly deteriorating health and ended up at LRMC, the thought being that I could have them stabilize me and then transfer me to a "real" medical center. As a retired surgeon, I consider myself a discriminating consumer of medical services (AKA difficult patient), so when I say that what I experienced at the Lakeway hospital was totally over the top medical care, I know the difference between good and mediocre medical care. They recognized that I had a serious problem and were on it immediately. The cardiologist, Dr. David Baldacchino, was there within minutes and diagnosed a massive pulmonary embolism even though I had a very atypical presentation. I was started on heparin and taken directly to the pulmonary scanner which confirmed the diagnosis. This was followed by a cardiac echo and numerous other tests. Dr. Baldacchino was there with me for about three hours until all the tests were done and I was in stable condition. The equipment there was state of the art and the technicians were both competent and professional. On the medical floor, the rooms were spacious and clean. The staff, with only a few exceptions, were competent, professional and compassionate. The hospital food was actually quite exceptional and, get this, they dont have set meals, but rather a room service menu with about 20+ selections for breakfast, lunch or dinner that can be ordered any time from 7 AM to 7 PM. The meals generally arrived within 30 minutes. The hospitalists were very good, unlike what you find in the Seton and St. Davids healthcare systems, and the discharge doctor actually spent about a half an hour explaining things to me and answering questions at the time of discharge. The real surprise came when the hospital CEO arrived the morning of my discharge on Saturday morning to ask me about my hospital stay and for any suggestions on how to improve care. She spent spent more than 30 minutes with me. The condition that I had carries about a 50% mortality. I credit the physicians and staff of Lakeway Regional Medical Center with saving my life and will be forever in their debt for that. Folks, this is not the hospital that you have been hearing about in the rumor mills and local media. I would recommend this hospital without reservation for all but major trauma and neurosurgery which are not taken care of there.

NOT WORTH THE HARRASMENT DUE TO AN UN-PROFFESSIONAL AND POTENTIALLY UN-QUALIFIED BILLING DEPARTMENT STAFF The Doctors and hospital staff are great however the billing department has serious issues. I received an automated message on a Saturday about an outstanding balance of $4500+. Since I have provided my insurance (excellent insurance coverage) verification to them each time, I was surprised to receive such a call. AND since the call was on a Saturday, there was no-one available to speak to regarding the call. However, there was an option to make a payment over the phone with a credit card. How convenient and one-sided...... Monday I called the billing department and spoke to someone who sounded like I had interrupted their nap time. I advised them I had received an AUTOMATED call on Saturday for which they promptly asked me Who did you speak to? They asked me to several repeated questions and then placed the billing issue on me as if I was supposed to have billed my insurance company for their services. They then stated that I must not have had insurance coverage during that time of the service. They had billed all my other service dates except for this one which was the LARGEST. Coincidence?? Needless to say, after a frustrating 30 minutes on the call, the billing department stated they would need to add my insurance information to that dates services and bill the insurance company. Again the billing person sounded put-out for having to perform their job. Yes, the doctors and nurses are great however I do not have the time to keep on top of the billing staff to ensure they DO THEIR JOB ACCURATELY and to avoid the unnecessary harassment of automated telephone calls.

The hospital facility is beautiful. The parking garage offers free parking and is very close to the front entrance. When we walked in we felt like we were in a fine hotel. We were greeted by a staff of professional looking, pleasant people who took us into admitting and had us on our way to our room in no time. During my short stay I was attended by two wonderful nurses, Rinat and Monica, both RNs and an excellent tech named Andrew. After my surgery I was directed through my physical therapy by Lori, a kind, professional Physical Therapist. Each day Lori had me up and walking with a program to help me heal faster. Lori was direct in her approach and very pleasant in her mannerism. Lori, Monica and Rinat are a credit to this hospital. My surgeon was Dr. Mark Burnett. He not only did an excellent job during surgery but visited me several times in my room and increased my treatment which was the reason I came home as early as I did. Dr. Burnetts team, the transport people, the recovery and operating room techs were all professional and dedicated to making me feel relaxed and confident that I was in good hands. I must say a word about the hospital food -- WONDERFUL, a variety not seen in my many years, attention to taste, appearance, variety and service which was unbelievable. The dietician and her staff are to be congratulated. Many thanks to these wonderful people. Lakeway Regional Medical Center is high on my list of recommendations. Steve Glenn Austin

I dont typically write reviews but I had such an extraordinary experience at Lakeway Regional Medical Center I wanted to share my experience. I had a unique situation that required immediate surgery, my surgeon was able to get an operating room on 1/2/16 - a Saturday, with only a few hours notice. Apparently Jan 2 is a busy a day for surgeries, because all the inter-city hospitals were unavailable. Upon entering the hospital I was treated with such kindness, the nurses wrapped me in warm blankets & joked with me to help appease my anxiety of the impending surgery. The anesthesiologist was great too, I explained my fear of operating rooms & that I did not want to see the inside of the operating room - the nurses all talked to me as they wheeled me in & he took me out immediately, I have no further recollection of that operating room. I stayed the night & awoke to a beautiful sun rise over the hill country. I sat in that bed & sipped my coffee thinking this is a 4 star hotel view. The rooms are beautiful, clean, & large. My night nurse was AWESOME, she was so kind & sweet - I wish I could recall her name. The food was surprisingly decent, I am very particular about food as such I am always amazed at how bad hospital food is. Not at Lakeway; they actually have healthy food options on their menu. I was very impressed with this hospital & their staff, I sincerely hope your experience is as positive as mine.

I call it the house of death, my husband went in for what he thought was a heart attack. cleared of that, told the ER staff that he was possibly having a stroke, and wanted the stroke medicine, they told him no,. because he didnt show the symptom, to add insult to injury they showed my husband the drug and refused to give him the stroke saving drug, He did have the stroke symptoms., What a JOKE!!! he told them his eye was numb his lips were numb and tingling, They released him last week thursday and he came back again on friday and again they said no stroke, and again no drug. Well guess what he had a stroke when he was in the house of death, Our friend referred my husband to a pain management doctor who said it sounded like he was having or had a stroke, he saved my husbands life. We ended up a seaton hospital and they transferred my husband to Breckenridge. Where they saved his life. The neurologist stroke team could not believe what I told them. Now we will have thousands of dollars in medical bills, my husband will never be ale to work again. Thanks to Lakeway medical center, and the sad thing is we have to pay these butchers a co pay. STAY AWAY !!!they have no idea what there doing, I could go on with more it is absolutely shocking that this hospital is still in business.
