My daughter had the unfortunate experience of having engaged Dr. Sponseller after numerous attempts to correct a condition she was born with. She searched and located Dr. Sponseller and chose him to do the surgery that was required. Dr. Sponseller was more concerned with his result than he was with his patient. My daughter aspirated in surgery while an inpatient. Her traction slipped and it took hours to get a response from the doctor or his team. My daughter was intimidated into signing consents for surgery while under the influence of many narcotics and was actually told by Dr. Sponseller if she did not sign a consent for him to do another surgery he would walk off her case. She was discharged after three months of hospitalization and rehab. We were provided inaccurate information on her rehab. Upon her return home, she was discharged on methadone with no treatment plan and once in rehab, she was diagnosed with bilateral kidney stones. This man should be disciplined for his lack of proper care and his arrogance. If you have anyone you love I strongly recommend that you stay away from him as he is distant, pompous, discourteous, lies, is unprofessional and takes gross advantage of young adults who have had no experience in the dealing with doctors. I have been dealing with doctors all of her life and I am well versed in hospital protocol and professional doctors. Dr. Sponseller is more interested in the result of his surgery than his patient and has never once reached out in the last five years to see how my daughter has done. We have now just discovered that his surgery caused permanent damage to her left leg and devices he installed are prolapsing. I would not recommend this tyrant to anyone. We are back in New York where they know what they are doing. Please stay away!!! He like to write articles and be told how wonderful a surgeon he is when in fact, he lacks the basic character of a good surgeon. He has no sensitivity to the needs of human beings. He is a scientist and not a doctor in the true sense of the world. He may have graduated medical school but he lacks empathy for the people he is supposed to be taking care of. Thank you for your time and I hope you take what I have said and give it serious consideration. The man needs to be stopped.

Eleven years ago (when my daughter was 12 years old) Dr. Sponseller treated my daugher for a rare condition known as spondylolethis (it is a front to back curve, where the lower part of my daughters spine was collapsing. I had gone to other orthopedics, none of whom detected it. They kept telling me, "she doesnt have scoliosis. I found Dr. Sponsellers name on line, and took my daughter. After taking a series of x-rays and performing a physical exam, he presented us with the diagnosis and several courses of action, from bracing (viewed as a temporary/stabilization fix) to spinal fusion surgery. He was sincere, thoughtful and answered all of our questions, including online and one late night conversation. Four months later she had the surgery. The entire team of Sponseller, the neurosurgeon, and the peds anesthesiologist were all wonderful. Despite anxiety leading up to the surgery and some level of pain associated with the recovery, my daughter remembers this as a positive experience and speaks of Dr. Sponseller fondly. She is now applying to medical school.

Dr. Sponseller is an excellent doctor. He performed my spinal fusion in January 2002 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was 11 years old and, after several years of monitoring and bracing, he determined it was best for me to have a spinal fusion due to the severity of my curvatures. I have returned to him a few times for random checks since then, and I am very happy with the outcome of my surgery. He is also always quick to respond to my emails (as I was concerned about having pregnancy complications due to my spinal fusion- luckily, everything went perfectly). In all, I want to thank Dr. Sponseller for always being professional, kind, trustworthy, and considerate. I am so thankful I had him as my surgeon 13 years ago.

Dr. Sponseller is rare in his expertise and I have found him to be both kind and empathetic in all aspects of caring for my daughter with Rett syndrome. In spite of the fact that my daughter is non verbal and cannot communicate "where it hurts", he was able to identify possible areas of pain with no need for x-rays, MRIs and so on. We are following his suggestion based on his examination, and thankfully, she is doing well. We are very grateful.
